What camera and what modes where you using?
If you can post the exif data from the images that would help.

Welcome to the forums...

I don't know a thing about the S3 IS except that it's a rather advanced P&S.

Picture #1 is showing flash reflections I think - the white dots. Probably water on the plant? The exposure, except for the flash spots, looks good. The dark shadows you see around the left edge of the vase/pot are also caused by direct flash. I believe the S32 IS has a pop-up flash but I don't know if an external flash can be added. Getting the flash off the camera would improve the shot. Just getting it over the lens and higher would also help.

While composition can be quite subjective I think yours needs much work. There are some rules, rule of thirds for one(try forum search). Primarily, the edges of the pot (which I assume was your target) are out of the image. I have to force myself to do a quick scan of the edges of my viewfinder to make sure I'm not cutting off something important. The background of that image also has extraineous crap in it, the basket and vase. Try to set up so the background of the image is also reasonable.

I like your last image. Even with some clutter in the background I find it interesting. And all three seemed focused and exposed OK.

Keep reading, shooting and posting and it will all come together

#1 flash is too harsh and the background is distracting.
#2 is out of focus and has your shadow in it!!
#3 I agree its acutally not too bad and its certainly pretty sharp
Keep practicing and posting!!

I know the look you were going for on #1, your flash just wasn't up to it. Did you spritz the flowers with water first? I think you need a much for subtle side light to accomplish that. Now in Photoshop it might be possible to achieve it. You've got the idea, just need to keep trying it.
