Hi,
I checked to see if Canon has a hand strap for the 10D.
Officially there is none. They only mention one for the 1Ds & other models
i.e. "Canon E1 Hand Strap for EOS 1, 1N, 1V, EOS 3, D2000 & 1D Cameras with Booster or A2 & A2e Cameras with VG-10 Grip "

But I noticed ppl on this forum are using handstraps for the 10D.
Which ones are you using? Also are they any 3rd party strap which are better than the E1 ?

I would very much like to hear why they are not such a good idea

For camera bag, I am thinking; to get is the Tamrac Velocity 9. ( I used my friend's Velocity 6 & liked it ; but it would be too small with the 10D & couple lenses) Has anyone tried this bag out ? Velocity 9 i.e.
which would a better bag ; for long walk & hikes so that it does not get
in the way ? suggestions & URLs welcome

I personally do not like backpacks or bags dangling over my shoulder on my sides. (Basically I hate external heavy dangling objects near my body.
Swinging & bumping into me. which explains the affinity for the hand strap.)

BTW after 100hrs of thought & vacillation , i had finally ordered my
10D & these two lenses
1. - 50mm/1.8 - for portraits
2. - 28-135 IS USM - for general purpose ( I'm looking fwd to be impressed by the image stabilization in there )

Can't answer about the handstrap, but I just bought a bag that I absolutely LOVE. It's the "Slinger" from Adorama -- it was actually designed with input from Herb Keppler from Pop Photo (I think that's his name -- I had an article in a PDF describing how they designed the bag, but I threw it away when I bought mine).

http://www.adorama.com/catalog.tpl?op=slinger_listing&sid=108657638721461 20

The best part is that it just dropped in price from $59 to $39. I can honestly say that I've paid twice that for bags that are half the quality. It is perfect for my DRebel. I carry it with the 50/1.8 II attached and the kit lens in the bag. I easily have room for at least another short or medium lens, and a flash or long lens (hello 75-300 IS...). Tons of pockets and storage for battery packs, CF cards, and the like.

I'm super-compulsive about bags -- esp. being able to try it in the store before I buy it -- but the price was so good on this one that I had to order one for myself figuring I'd return it if I hated it -- but this bag rocks! It carries like a messenger (or bike) bag and swings in front of you if you need to get into it. If you hike, it includes a hidden waist belt to help keep it stable if you're scrambling on all fours.

Jeez -- you'd think I was on commission here, but I'm just a satisfied customer :)

Edited to add: If you follow the above link, there's a link to the PDF file on Adorama's site. It's midly interesting reading.

The E1 handstrap works on the 300d, D60, 10D (with BigEd attached, inclusively) and all 1-series cameras.

thanks for info on the "Slinger" from Adorama. I think you have conviced me to get it over the velocity 9. Hower does it have sufficient padding of decent quality. (say I dropped the camera bag ?)

I have examined a Velocity 9 in a shop but I don't like it:

- it's a single strap - not much different than a shoulder bag to share the weight with two shoulders;
- it's fast in action and has no zipper. Since it has no rain cover and it is not sealed with the zipper, raining may be a problem;
- it's not easy to take out other stuff;
- I'm not sure if it is easy to take out long lens when the bag is sling to the chest.

I may be wrong because I have not actually used it. I just offer my views...

Sorry to disagree. I use the Velocity 9 with my 10D/ BGED3 and my Mark II. It's great when you are moving around. The bag slips around for easy removal and insertion of the camera, and slips right back to your back. I alternate between it and a Tamrac Expedition 5.

Scott

Absolutely -- I've owned several LowePro (Nova series and others) and Tamrac bags and currently own a LowePro Mini Trekker for when I want to carry everything I own.

Don't let the fact that it's a "house brand" dissuade you from the Slinger like it almost did me. It is every bit as padded as any bag I've ever owned from LowePro or Tamrac and it's very configurable. Heck - for $39, it's a great walk-around bag even with other larger bags.

The Velocity 9 looks pretty cool, too... They don't have a pic of it loaded with stuff so it's hard for me to gauge the relative size of it.

I carry the following in my Velocity 9:

10D w/Big Ed

100-400L (on one side)

16-35L
100mm Macro
1.4x TC
(all on other side)

420EX, batteries, lens pen (in front pocket). 550ex would probably not fit, but I honestly haven't tried it. 420 fits in one of the pockets.

Scott, do you think the slinger is bid enough for a Rebel with 70-200mm F4L attached, flash, and a couple other lenses?

It will fit the DRebel with 70-200 or 100-400 attached, the flash on one side of it and a shorter lens on the other side. The flash can't be attached..
You can also toss in a rocket blower and a spare battery and card.
