I'm having a difficult time getting my strobes to fire. I have a Canon 30D and a Novatron light set (older set w/no 'slave option'). I bought a Novatron slave trigger, but it won't work unless I aim my flash directly at it. I've also tried a sync cord, but it's awkward and sometimes falls out.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

I'm also interested in This. I have an ST-E2 for my Canon 300d (Digital Rebel) and it triggers them, but it triggers them before the shutter. I found a post about how to disable the ETTL, but then it only works if I'm pointing directly at the flash. :(
I've seen a Remote Trigger for sale on Ebay that has a Sync port and a photosensor. Would this work for my remotes? Only one of them has a Sync jack, the other one is just IR triggered.

Optical and IR triggers generally need to be pointed right at the flash that they're to trigger. Get either a Sync cord or a set of Pocket Wizards.

Optical slaves are polarized and have to be plugged in correctly.

Turn the optical slave around in the Novatron HH sync connection.

Pull it out
Rotate it 180 degrees
Plug it back in.

Please post back if this solves your issue.

Enjoy! Lon

I tried both directions. It does work one way, but I have to point my camera directly at it. I've upgraded to the 30D and had hoped it might trigger better than with my XT, but no such luck.

Thanks,

Are you tring to trigger the Novatron with the built in flash on either the XT or the 30D?

I tried the built in flash on my XT, but not with my 30D. I used my 430EX Speedlite with it.

Do you have the speedlight set to manual mode (not that manual mode would explin the issues you are having).

But, for an optical slave to work with the Novatron it must be in manual mode (no preflash).

Another possibility, is the optical slave you have a "regular" optical slave, or a so called "digital" optical slave that can ignore a preflash?
