View Full Version : Paintball: Spyder Cup 2007 - Hollywood Sports Park

I spent this past weekend at the Hollywood Sports Park, California, shooting paintball with PaintballPhotography.com's Gary Baum and Chrono300. My preparation had been shooting at my local paintball field, The Shack in Lompoc, California, the week before for five hours. I have had some processing setbacks, probably because I am busy and am trying to rush this out, so it is a bit half-assed. I also want to post a series as an animation but I couldn't find the software in a timely fashion so I'll come back and edit it in in a day or so, sigh.
Anyway, the event images:
#1 Hollywood Sports Park
http://www.dwightmccann.com/Images/PaintBall/SpyderCup2007/fullsize/Spyder2007-015_fs.jpg
#2 The Team Captain's meeting on Friday night:
http://www.dwightmccann.com/Images/PaintBall/SpyderCup2007/fullsize/Spyder2007-035_fs.jpg
#3 The most striking team on the field ... I am waiting to hear from them to get pictures ... I don't even have their name but it may be "Project Mayhem"!
http://www.dwightmccann.com/Images/PaintBall/SpyderCup2007/fullsize/Spyder2007-1097_fs.jpg
#4 The infamous PaintballPhotography.com himself, Gary Baum, shooting with a fisheye and Zigview adapter about two feet from a player in action with paintballs whizzing by, totally fearless and willing to do anything to get the perfect picture!
http://www.dwightmccann.com/Images/PaintBall/SpyderCup2007/fullsize/Spyder2007-1184_fs.jpg
#5 This is what the fields looked like the night before play:
http://www.dwightmccann.com/Images/PaintBall/SpyderCup2007/fullsize/Spyder2007-011_fs.jpg
#6 In this shot, the guy on the right, who is overrunning the guy on the left, has just hit him on his left wrist. This image is the centerpiece of a multi-image animation that I will be putting together and posting here when I get it working that shows what happens when a single player is charged by two players at once and doesn't know what to do about it! The dead player was hit on wrist and upper arm but didn't want to die! I think the paint mist and cover parts spraying out on the right are from a bunker shot fired by the second rusher who is out of sight on the left.
http://www.dwightmccann.com/Images/PaintBall/SpyderCup2007/fullsize/Spyder2007-1415_fs.jpg
Here's the animation. The defender gets off two rounds and then sees someone coming up on the outside, shifts hands and looks that way, and the attacker runs up the inside and blasts him. He then fires, after he is tagged, and then the hit hurts and he brings it to his side.
http://www.dwightmccann.com/Images/PaintBall/SpyderCup2007/SpyderSeries1.gif
All images were shot as jpegs and are 'out of camera' except for resizing and sharpening.

Here was the view from my camera…you are right I must be crazy to do this sort of thing, but I am sure by know Dwight has figured out that I am a little obsessive compulsive about getting pictures
http://img157.imageshack.us/img157/6870/ql7p2555we8.jpg
I frequently do this at NPPL seven man and PSP X ball events where I really get clobbered…here is one from the PSP LA open that I took using my Zig Viewer. BTW the Zig Viewer was hit and destroyed just after this picture was taken
http://img293.imageshack.us/img293/9501/gl5t0623rf3.jpg
As a result it became a $250 picture that much to my surprise no one was interested in publishing….
I use Easy Gif Animator for my animations. Since I have an attention span of about 30 seconds and I usually do not read directions, it was very easy even for me to figure out; you can download it at http://www.blumentals.net/egifan/

Number 3 does look good, but I like the action and splatter of number 6. Looking good.

Ah, the Master's work! I don't think I'm committed enough to this sport to take the abuse you do to get the best image! I don't mind the equipment losses but the body (my body, that is) damage is a touch more than I'm up for! :-)

Thank you. I was in a such a hurry last night that I didn't do a very good job ... I'll work on it and update some images over the next couple of days.
Number 3 does look good, but I like the action and splatter of number 6. Looking good.
Thanks ... I think when I get the animation put together that this rather marginal image will be more impressive in context.

Thanks. Yes, I decided to put up mostly general shots of the grounds, etc., for some reason although I have a few other decent player shots. I like the ones with a paintball (going or coming) and their eyes. But I gotta' get that animation done before I do anything else! :-)

Geez, Dude, thanks! And welcome to POTN. What makes you think Gary didn't get hit? I don't have any of him with paint on his body because they used marbles instead of paintballs but I have this:

Yes, most of the people I shoot aren't trying to kill each other (and me!) I am considering going to Mexico for a tournament but I don't think I'll be doing a lot of this.

No collage for this ... no time ... but I thought more people would like those shots! Maybe they've already been done a lot.

Chris, great to meet you, too. Yes, too bad about that beer but being at the other end of the park made it a little awkward. Gary parked right outside the door but I didn't see any beer in his car! :-)

I personally enjoyed the camaraderie and showing Dwight how we do things but personally I felt the event was sort of boring due to the fact it was only a three man event, all the fields were identical and there were no break outs.

Oh, c'mon Gary, you could hardly stand up, let alone remember anything, with that flu you were giving everyone! Anyway, if you can find a Mexican/South American event that works with my schedule I'll probably give it a go ... with an athletic cup, of course!

But to really get a feel for the sport you should try to shoot a 7 man event or an X ball event

Gary that camera is incredible! Those shots make we want to beg and barrow to get one. Great stuff and wow you already wrote the story (mine is half done while digging on information on the past events). See in in Boston in a week (less Dwight...wish you could see how the game is really played!)
Dwight that shot of the captians meeting is just wow, I had no idea that room was even there.
I will post my stuff up after I get the Spyder people some shots and get my story/submittals to the magazine.
By the way I just got my issue of the latest PB2X in so I am going to post a few shots that missed the cut (from my best event to date) up here this weekend.

I agree, the crops in the NCPA story were a little off. The story was nice though, good work. The back cover and that big photo series of the guys jumping from the plane were all mine, and a few randoms. I thought their choice of photos was interesting for all that too. I took around 200 during a photoshoot the first day down at D-Day, they are all from that.

Good! If it is October and I can make it I will likely get two MIIIs ... if the focusing issues are resolved ... there is still a lot of discussion suggesting that there are issues even if you are not having any. Also, if they come out with a 1DsMIII I may be compelled to get one of each.

The reason that mantra is so useless is because it is incompatible with the flow of the Universe, your own Chi and a bunch of little quanta ... that is, it is not true and you MUST have that lens! I don't know why you pretend to fight against what is clearly a dictate of God! Two MIIIs and a 300mm f/2.8L IS! Do you need a stone tablet?

It never appeared that the players were intentionally shooting at any of the photographers ... most of the players are desperate to get their mugs in a magazine and shooting the togs isn't the way to do it!

I will call your wife this weekend and assure her that it is OK for you to pick up another 1DMIII and a 300mm f/2.8L IS ... and maybe a Sigma 8mm f/3.5! Then she can go to Saks 5th and spend a few sheckles on jewelry and/or clothes ... and if your daughter is going she should get an allotment, too!
Actually, I have decided it is just your Jewish whining/guilt warding off behavior for show and you have every intention of buying this stuff ASAP and just like to make a production out of it. I have no sympathy for this approach ... just buy this crap and get over it. In fact, to celebrate I have added a Zigview to my B&H wishlist!
BTW, I just brought home another Pelican 1660 to put lighting equipment in. When are you coming up here for dinner and discussion? I think I'll get you into studio lighting, too!

Well, if you have a LOT of cash then get what Gary has: 1D Mark III with 75-300mm lens, and second body with 15mm fisheye. The first body will run around $4500. I don't know what the rest cost but you can find out by going to B&H Photo Video in NYC's website ... a highly recommended vendor! If you have less cash then perhaps we need some specifics as well as a sense of your financial independence ... if you are a teenager supported by parents or Medical Doctor with a thriving practice makes some difference on what I/we might recommend.

Ryan, how do you tell one team from another? The outfits mostly look the same.

Dwight, I am glad you had such a good time. You've got some good shots there.
Gary, as usual...you are the man. :D I'd love to shoot with you but I can't afford to replace the gear. Some day maybe.

I'm very interested, looking at a shot like this, how you actually protect the front of the lens from being smashed by a rogue paintball? I see the camera covered fairly reasonably, but what about the glass?

The glass is as the mercy of the 200 MPH paintballs.

Tristan, OC's correct, of course! The body is a 1DMII that I paid $4000 for. The lens is a 70-200mm f/2.8L IS that I paid $1700 for. The Kata raingear was $180. The hat was a gift. The mask (used) was a gift from Gary. The orange shirt was bought by my wife because she knew it was the "safe" color. As I am sure Gary would agree, "This is all just 'stuff' and pales in significance against the joy of being integrated into the action." While I would not say paintball photography is a rich man's sport it certainly helps to know that you can afford to repair/replace damaged equipment. I expect that I was the only one close by with equipment in the same category as Gary ... but mine is the result of concert photography and bits and pieces of other client work.

Instead of worrying about damage to your equipment just get insurance. Since I now shoot for multiple magazines including a fishing magazine where boating is involved I've got insurance that will cover "ANY" loss, my fault or not.

That sounds like damn good cover. I'll definitly have a look into it.
I'm sure it is expensive to replace gear, but sounds and looks like a heap of fun. I'd love to get into paintball a little more, if only Sydney had more paintball outlets.
Keep up the good photos! Very inspirational!

Dwight,
What is the camera protection you have used when taking photos at paintball? & is there a link?
Thanks,
Claire

Here was the view from my camera…you are right I must be crazy to do this sort of thing, but I am sure by know Dwight has figured out that I am a little obsessive compulsive about getting pictures

Kata ... just do a search and you'll find tons of stuff by them. I think there are threads on POTN about raingear, too.
