Just stumbled across an interview with one of the founders of nikonians on youtube. Its from photokina last year and i couldnt stop laughing at how full of it he is. He seemed really happy to say that thye had 58,000 members, while we have (as of this moment) 108,715
You can see it here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v1sOHeUZoI8&mode=related&search=)

What do you expect him to say on an advertorial: you expect him to be downbeat and explain the things that aren't so good? I think they have 85000 members now. All our members are free. How many would we have if we started charging?

One thing I did like that he said in that video was where he mentioned their paying subscribers get insurance for their camera gear. I'd pay a membership fee here on POTN to get that. Actually, I kind of do. I've donated to the cause here a couple times... Where's my insurance? :p

You still have to pay extra for the insurance though i think. Being a paying member only gives you access to the insurance option.
Edit: and have we ever had a booth at photokina? Or was that just some sort of weak membership drive by nikonians?

Why does it have to be a 'weak' membership drive? I respect that they are going out to potential members and having a go.
I don't understand why some people are so critical of Nikon. It is BS. The Nikonian business model is very different to here and you cannot compare. The Canon user base is larger so of course as a proportion you might reasonably expect us to have more, especially as it's free.
There are many more features/benefits on the Nikonians site. If people want them then good luck. Here, it is a user community. That is all I need, so a lot of what Nikonians offers would not appeal particularly. I agree with Lonnie Panty about the insurance, but Pekka clearly isn't that interested in the commercial side of things. His call. If I had a Nikon I would still join and I absolutely wouldn't waste my time BS-ing there about Canon.
I find these kind of posts very irritating. We are all photographers. Maybe we need a 'branded gear based, Dick substitute sub-forum' for some of you guys :p

I was wondering about that. I kind of expected there would be an extra charge for it, or else the standard membership fee would have to be too high to cover it. With a large user base like that, though, I'm sure they've negotiated a rate that makes it much more affordable than if each member just went to their local agent and bought an individual policy.

I should buy a Nikon lens cap, join Nikonians, and see what their insurance premiums to cover my Canon gear look like.

In this thread (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=336516), I suggested POTN create an insurance program for its members, similar to the Nikonian program. As you can see, the idea didn't get past four reply posts.

;)
I'm with you, Condyke. I don't think there's any point in ridiculing those who choose a different brand and/or join a different forum. And I think this thread says more about the OP than it says about Bo Stahlbrandt or the Nikonians.

I would think any site with 10k+ users would/should rightly be proud of their customer base, since they are definitely doing something right. Life is not black OR white. A world without a free choice would be quite boring - and development would come to a standstill.

condyk, the voice of reason.
Nikon ain't so bad. There are many, many pulitzer prize winning photos taken with Nikons.
I used to own one. I switched back in the D100 days to the 10D, mainly because of Canon's IS lenses which greatly outnumbered Nikon's.
I still think Nikon's user interface is superior, as well as the very tactile feel of their rubber coating on their cameras.
