Here ya go...25 sequential frames. My first. There has been zero post-processing to these photos except for BreezeBrowser's complimentary USM.
Enjoy: http://www.rfmsports.com/USSBA/Photos/USSBAPhotos.html
More photos to come tomorrow, including photos from my own, bone-jarring ride in a World Champion Jet Sprint Boat.

Awesome: I think that your camera just showed its capabilities very graphically.
BTW--was that an official turn. I can't see how any boat would be able to make a turn in that narrow of an inlet.

WOW!! Shots are great you captured every second. You just got to love the MKII, it works overtime. It is going to be a great season.
Very well done. I can't wait to see the rest.

Is it just me or have jims galleries gotten a little larger since the new camera came along?

Very impressive - The camera not the boat crew!
There is so little time between shots now that you wonder where a stills camera stops and a movie camera begins.

Excellent action captures. MK II and Jim seem to be a perfect match.

Thanks all! It was awesome to be there and knowing I was getting it all.
gsmx2: Yes that was an official turn. These boats run upwards of 90mph through some of the turns. The g-forces sustained is incredible. I went for a ride right after the race--before the safety crew left--and it was the most thrilling moment in my life.
Afterwards the safety crew came over and said that Dean (the driver) had not held back at all like they usually do for rides. We went full out, race speeds. G-forces are upwards of 6-7 g's through the turns and they can accellerate from 0-90 in 2.5 seconds.
And, I am still sore. Just from the g-forces. It was absolutely incredible. Way, waaaaaaaaaaaaay better than any thrill ride you could ever think of riding.
This was my second ride, but the first one at full race speeds. You go so fast it about takes your breath away. And yes, all that happens in those little 12-20 foot canals!!
I'll post full galleries later today.

I tellya Timmy, it's harder to decide which ones to post as there are so few throw-aways anymore.

Asumming they made it out un-scathed, that's an awesome series.
I shot my first drag races with the Mark II this past saturday.
Having the extra FPS helps a lot. I know find myself being exceptionally picky on the shots I keep.
If you care to check them out, its at www.dmtphoto.com.
It's amazing how the focus stays put on the action at all times, isn't it???

Thanks. Yes. SI settings except I had AIServo to fast. I normally have it at standard, but tried fast this time. Didn't seem to make much difference. I shot about the same # of shots as the last race and had about the same # to OOF's so it seemed okay. Lost AI a few times when some very dark clouds came over, but it recovered quickly and never hindered my shoot at all. I didn't have any issues the last race and ran standard AIServo.
I shoot the ChampCars and Trans-Am in two weeks at PIR so that will be fun!

Oh yeah. This camera is so freaking fast that you don't even think about any of that. It just happens. It's a beautiful blend of photographer and the most incredible camera ever made.

You've gotta be loving the MKII for drag racing! That kind of racing normally isn't my thing but you have some awesome shots there. Very nice.

Good catch Jim. I am betting that one of those guys was looking at the front of the boat wondering why in the hell they wrote "Wild Ride" on the front of it, LOL

After looking at your shot of the course, those guys have got to be wacked! No wonder they need roll cages, there is no room for error, they are racing in ditches...I LOVE IT!!!!
What is your saturation set at, SI? Are you shooting RAW+jpeg?
Or jpeg only?
defordphoto
7th of June 2004 (Mon), 16:53
We were all joking about the Wild Ride name. They have a new boat this year and it's having some handling problems. (DUH!) But, we all think they'll be fast when then can get it on top of the water.
I remember when I first saw this form of racing 3 years ago on SpeedChannel and also thought these guys were freaking nuts at how fast they go through in these little canals.
Now I'm out there begging for a ride!
The SI settings are color matrix 4: AdobeRGB
See: http://www.siphoto.com/?canon1DM2.inc
And these are all shot Large-Fine JPEG level 8 (default is 7). SI settings are RAW with large JPEG. I don't need RAW with this setup.
Closeup of frame #4 shows they probably know something bad is going to happen. I saw this coming before they did, held down the button and pointed. Also when in this type of sequence the mirror/shutter is moving so fast, you have clear view through the viewfinder the whole time.

What a great advertisment for the MK II.
I want one now! :D :D
But even with the best equipment it requires an excellent photographer to utilize it fully which, well done.

Phenomenal!! I didn't even take a second battery out to the track with me. Shot all day long, from 9am until 4:30pm and the thing still read full. 1540 shots, some chimping, no IS. Lovin' it!

On the first course on the Waimarkere (pardon the spelling) river in the South Island of NZ they used to have a little jump which was quite interesting. The sport has come along way since then but when I first went to watch it on a proper shale river it was awesome and the spectators could get right up close to the action and soaked with the spray.
What type of pumps are they running in the States, I know most guys use Scott pumps in NZ and AU. It's quite amazing to hear 1200 hp big blocks and the 900 hp small blocks at full revs. In a 3 metre boat it a huge amount of scare factore. In Rotorua you can dive a 300hp boat with an instructor beside you pointing the way, it's scary even with that small an amount of grunt.

Mthorpe: I think they all use Scotts.
aam1234: Many times both!
