Hello Neil, That is a nice picture but, as you realise, it is rather flat, although not bad.
Have you any editing programmes?
Whether you have or not, Why not enable Image Editing OK in your profile to permit others to play with it and make suggestions?

a little boost of saturation may help. (but depends on an editing program)
Also, you got a bit lucky with the aperture on this one considering you're using full auto mode. next time you're shooting portraits where you don't care about including the background (like this one) use AV mode and open your apeture up as much as possible (smaller the number, larger the opening) to really blur out the background to keep the viewers attention on the subject.
keep up the good work.

Hi, NW. This is a 30-second edit that I use when I feel that a photo SHOULD be good, but just seems flat. I used the TLR Digital Velvia action, available free from www.thelightsrightstudio.com (http://www.thelightsrightstudio.com) and on www.atncentral.com (http://www.atncentral.com). It works with all recent versions of Photoshop and I think Photoshop Elements as well.
I had to compress it down to level 7 to get it under the forum size limit; it looked better before obviously. ;)

It is a nice photo. I think it could look better by cropping off the distracting colours on the left, by warming the skin tones just a little and tweaking sharpness around the eyes. Here's my quick edit....
