Hi guys,
Have you ever tried to use an upper size when you open a RAW file in ps ? It porposes file size up to 6144 by 4096. The purpose would be to print a 20x30 in.
How does this function compare to others like the "resample" in PS ?
Thanks,
MikeG

I assume you are using PS CS to open a raw file ? I don't use it myself, but others have reported that PS's resampling produces better quality than upsizing a RAW file, but I have no direct experience of this. I have upsized using PS7 and the results are very good.

Hello:
I too, have gotten great results from the upsampling in PS/CS. It gives similar results to Fractals, but in a much smoother workflow.
Better quality still, is CaptureOne software from Phase One. I customarily res up or D60 files to page size, 8.7 x 13.2, resulting in a 29mb file @ 300dpi. Just amazing quality if you feel like spending another $500 or so, for the software.
Thanks.

The new version of C1 SE (less expensive than the Pro version) can also resize upon conversion.

Have you considered Qimage? Mnay people use it to resize.

I just tried Qimage for upsizing to a file. I always use it for printing (it upsizes when you print but leaves the file as is) but I tried it to a file last night, it looks very good. I'm dropping it off to the lab today so I'll have the final print in a few days (16x20). Frankly, I've compared almost all of the upsizing programs (PS Bi-cubic, Genuine Fractals, Extensis Smart Pixel, C1 and Qimage) and haven't seen a real big difference in any of them. I like QImage the best because I don't have to actually save all those big files, just que up to print and let QImage size it up as it sends to the printer. QImage does a fine job of sharpening at print time as well, so I don't even have to worry about that until print time either.

It's funny you mention file size. I printed an 8x10 of a JPEG from my MarkII yesterday. Qimage processed the file to 100mb before printing.

Right, but that was only during the print process, the file was left untouched. It's my understanding that QImage upsizes to the printer's optimum print dpi size (not the standard 300 dpi most use), which may be as high as 720 dpi, hence the large file. I don't know for sure what's right or wrong, but the results are always top notch.

Does anyone have a workflow for taking a mark II raw and upsizing to 20x30?

I use the Epson 2200. It prints photos best at 1440 or 2880. I usually use 1440 unless I'm going to frame it, then I use 2880.

I'm using the 2200 as well. I used to use only 2880 until Mike Jordan made me take a 2nd look at 1440 and I almost hardly ever use 2880 any more, I've taken a loupe to quite a few and it's really hard to see much difference except for a few certain pics here and there (and I don't know why).
I seems I read somewhere that Mike Chaney from Qimage said it sends files to the 2200 at 720 dpi, something about the native resolution of the printer, I can't remember where I read it though, a forum or users group.

Daniel, are you using QImage to rez up?

Daniel,
I don't think PS CS will convert the MKII file RAW file yet will it? If you use the canon sofware to convert then use PS CS, image size, bicubic, resample checked, and increase the size in 10% increments until you get to the desired size, you should be happy with the results. Don't sharpen until after you've upsized. I know it uses a lot of CPU resources, but I try to do all this in 16 bit mode. Record it in an Action so you can just push a button next time.
If you need more details, let me know.

UPDATE:
Oh yeah baby! I just got the 16x20 last night and it is one fine print. Qimage did the job very nicely. The print looks just as sharp as the 8x10 I printed from my 2200.
If you've never tried a large Chromira glossy print, you don't know what you are missing. This one was for a customer but I'm having some other shots printed as displays (Got to show em' big to sell em' big)

I usually print 10x8. Many of my images are smaller than 10x8. Qimage does the upsizing for me on the Epson 2200. I will USM image in PS, flatten layers and save as. Qimage will apply a small amount of sharpening with the upsizing process which you can adjust. I have used nothing but Qimage for two years and I really like it.

I've even turned over all the sharpneing to Qimage. Under filters, there is a USM filter with a new sharpneing equalizer that works very, very nicely. Of course under interpolation there is the final sharpening adjustment as well.
