Major difference for me seems to be that the SD800IS offers a wider angle lens.
SD800:
28 - 105mm equiv (wide angle lens)
F2.8 - F5.8
3.8x Optical ZoomSD850:
35 - 140mm equiv
F2.8 - F5.5
4x Optical zoomTo me, this difference is fairly significant. Of course it's personal taste, but given the choice I'd rather go wider.

Yes, and 5 more small things:
The SD850 works slower and has slower frame rate.
The SD850 gives 8MP versus the SD800's 7MP (no real advantage)
The SD850 has a bit sharper monitor (230.000 px vs 200.000)
The SD850 has an even higher magnification macro mode
The SD850 is significantly more expensive
All in all, I think at the moment the SD850 is the least attractive offer of the series. It's expensive and not better than the SD700, which is better built, too (all metal switches and doors, very luxurious).

New member but I'll weigh in since these are the two cameras I'm looking at.
The two competing features for me are the wide lense of the 800 and the time-lapse movies of the 850. The wide lens holds more sway and unless I can manage to get a good line on an upcoming canon release that has both - along with everything else - I'll be getting the 800.

Good choice. I sure love mine.
I didn't know about the movies (never use this), but time-lapse movies seem like a cool feature though!
