I am getting closer to the day I can purchase my 10D  and am looking at getting the following lenses.

100-400 L IS

and either of these

Tamron 28-75 2.8 XR Di or Canon EF 28-135/3.5-5.6 IS USM

I would appreciate some guidance as to which lens would make a better general purpose lens. From what I can read, they are both very good for the price and will produce some very good images, and are about the same price.

Thanks for the help.

The 100-400mm L is by all accounts (I don't have one) a great lens and I don't think you will be disapointed with it.

I have both the Tamron 28-75mm and the Canon EF 28-135mm. The Tamron is always in my camera bag, I am not really sure where the EF 28-135mm is at the moment and I don't really care. In terms of image quality the Tamron is vastly superior and fills the gap between my EF 17-40L and 70-200L very well indeed.
