This was the first result (http://users.utu.fi/paanni/camera.html) when I Googled for "powershot a85 webcam".
I noticed it's only for Linux, though. If you don't have that, try the Google search yourself. There were plenty more results returned.

I briefly tried to get my A75 to work as a webcam. I managed to get my computer to show me what my camera was seeing via USB (live preview), but the software didn't work as a webcam. It is theoretically possible. The easiest way, I found, was to use a video-input device (tv card, USB video input etc) and the cameras video out - not the sleekest of ways, but the only way to make it work.
In the end, it isn't worth it. You can get a decent webcam for less than £10 ($20), and the damage to your camera sustained from having it on over long periods of time may make the initial savings less attractive than they seem right now.

I don't think there is a problem having the camera turned on for longer intervals, as long as it isn't used at high temperatures. The LCD backlight will loose a bit in intensity, but it will take _many_ hours to get a significant loss of light.
