Does anybody know the warranty situation if you are using no-name batteries?
I am just looking into buying one or two more batteries. But the original ones are very expensive.
However EBAY is full of no-name batteries with cheap offers (Two for $15, ...).
I am just a bid reluctant on buying some no-name batteries made somewhere in China somehow according to Canon specs or not. Especially since there have been tons of problems on the cell phone market with damaged cell phones due to faulty no-name batteries.
The other solution may be to get some battries from "Digital" or other battery vendors. They are not that cheap but still cheaper than Canon.

Any advice here?

Thanks
Stefan

If a no-name battery 'bites the big one' and damages your camera (and if you are truthful about what happened when describing it to Canon repair) quite likely you will end up having to pay for repairs.

Also, I'd be wary of 2 for $15 specials. Anything less than about $20 for a Li-Ion replacement I would be worried about.

The folks that had problems with their cellphones were the ones buying $5 batteries off of street vendors in Thailand. The cells shorted internally, and lacked the required protective circuits to keep them from becoming little bombs in peoples' pockets.

If you go to a 'big-box' electronics emporium (like Best Buy) or a chain camera store, and get a 3rd party battery and pay upwards of $20 for it, you can at least maybe get the store or the battery vendor to pay for repairs, if your camera is damaged by a defective battery.

If all this makes you nervous, then get Canon-branded batteries. Then, there won't be any questions.

Some members have used these, things, and none have had any problems or noticed any difference in performance between original and generic. I just ordered one extra $15 bp-511 from www.eforcity.com for my battery grip.

WHy bother with the totally cheap route when you can buy BP-511 at Walmart for $20 AND they have a 5 year warranty!

I bought an unknown BP-512 2 years ago and its now in the landfill. The original 3 year old Canon battery holds a better charge.

actual canon brand?! omg, they are around $140 here (~USD$97). i'd find that hard to believe, even with our markups...

the last time i was in the states, i picked up some generic ones (digipower, i think??) for around USD$30

I purchased a replacement battery for the G3/10D from ecost.com made by Lenmar, part # DLC511, at a cost of $42.54 US.
It's 7.4V 1300mAh and works very well and actually last longer than the original Canon batteries, one being a Canon replacement BP512.
The other thing I really like about it is, it has gold plated contact, which I believe is the best contact material there is.
