I'd be interested to hear - out of those who have a full-time job besides their photography business - what they do for a living.
Me, well, I'm a full-time student. I'm hoping to get into either marketing or teaching high school.
That is, of course, unless my master plan of becoming a full-time photographer don't work out! Either way, I obviously plan on continuing photography.

Professional and life-long student. Ph.D in electrical engineering. Playing with expensive toys that keep on breaking with a budget-oriented supervisor who prefers having me fix them than paying a competent technician to do that job. Good for learning, bad for the thesis and for my progress...
Also looking for a "real" job...
I believe there's a thread like this in the General Chat section. Unless you are interested in knowing only what wedding photographers do as a living.

I think a thread a long time ago asked about day jobs and there were quite a few CADD operators/Draftsmen on here.
We're 95% MicroStation at the firm I work for...used Autocad for a long time though...realease 9 through 2000i (if I remember correctly)
but I guess we have to be careful with that...it could get into a whole Canon/Nikon thing

Full time Network Administrator for a small lab. Basically if anything plugs into the wall, I have to fix it or get somebody to fix it ;)
Talked seriously last night with a friend about going full time in photography next year.... just not happy working this job right now. If I can do 20-25 weddings a year with little or no advertising effort, what could I do IF I had more time to devote to it?

Jeff, you have a natural tallent @ photography. Your photos are gorgeous. If you are booking that many with no advertising, up your advertising, up the prices a bit and you could easily go full time.

I have a contract with Penguin Publishing for a sports mystery fiction novel that I am writing. Whenever I send them a new chapter, they send me a check. And when and if I complete the novel, I will get paid royalties forever and a huge completion bonus. Unfortunately, since my mother passed away from cancer, I haven't been able to write as much or as well as I would like and haven't sent in many chapters in some time.
I also work as a part time contracter for Time Warner Cable. When people don't pay their bills, I go to their homes and take away their equipment, phone modems, cable modems and digital boxes and remotes. I get paid for every piece of equipment I retrieve. Bet ya'll didn't know I had a tough side ;-)

Healthcare professional - I'm a registered nurse first year out of uni. It pays the bills and pretty much all the extra cash goes towards camera gear.. I'm trying to build up what I want now before I go overseas or buy a house.
I love my job. First job I've had where I've had the experience of getting up and honestly enjoying going to work.
Photography... while I do really enjoy it and I've had some opportunities to go part- or full-time with it, it's something I find I enjoy more as art at the moment with money coming in from landscapes and some magazine work. Eventually I wouldn't mind going part-time but I don't want to lose the enjoyment of it as an art form and I think that relying on it to bring in the money will kill a bit of that.

Most of our work is making shelters for the oil field...which means that we are much busier in the fall & winter than we are in the summer. I've only recently started shooting weddings on my own and I'm hoping that I can work it so I can take spring & summer off from the day job for photography and then go back to designing when it's busy in the winter. Either that, or maybe I could be a stay at home dad when we have kids...while shooting wedding.

Full time I work for my Dad who runs his own CNC Machine shop. We primarily work manufacture aircraft ground tooling, but we also do other stuff as well.
I'm working at wedding photography since last year. I'm doing my first full paid job this year, and so far everything is going well.
My other main goal currently is getting myself ready to apply for the local police department. I've been a volunteer with them for over 2 yrs, and hopefully once I enter the application process, things works out (3% acceptance rate).

Wow! As a newbie to this forum I have just read every entry in this thread. Absolutely fascinating. I own and operate Sunshine Metal Works, Inc., a metal roofing general contractor in Alabama. (http://www.sunshinemetalworks.com/ if you need a new roof) Host the website http://www.allaboutmetalroofs.com/ and do commercial photo work in the construction industry. I also freelance for construction magazines. Below is one of my pics that will grace the August 2007 cover of Metal Roofing Magazine. I also did that job and can be seen on my allabout..... web site. I am just branching out into wedding photography hoping to have a full time second career when it is time for me to give up roofing. Thanks for all the entries.

I actually thought you were serious at first.
Funny story - when I was a kid, I was out catching frogs with my Mom and my Brother at a pond. This big truck drove by with "honey wagon" written on the side. Me, having a crazy sweet tooth, started chasing it. When my mom asked what I was doing I said I wanted some honey. She explained what the "Honey Wagon" was and, damn, to this day, I'm happy I didn't go and try and get a "Free Sample" ... LOL

HAHA... oh man. That story is funny. And, if I were an exotic dancer, I'd go broke because I'd have to PAY out to get anyone to watch me. lol. Well they do have those guys they hire for a GAG stripper... I could probably do that.

Up until June I was a general contractor Specializing in residential construction. My grandfather owned the company until 2004 when he passed away. I was left 52% of the company in his will and my uncle was left 48%. Neither of us had a general contractors licence so I bit the bullet and got mine. Now my uncle runs the company. I over see the business end and he deals with the day to day hard labor end.
I have been shooting since 2003 and have been shooting senior portraits, sports and weddings since 05. In June I decided to go at it full time and my new freshly built studio should open mid January/ early February.
I went to UGA for 2 years and transferred to USC Aiken after my grandfather died. I finished up my degree in business management and my associates in engineering graphics technology (certified draftsman/ cad op).
The construction company pays the bills and buys my toys. The photography business builds up my IRA
