Between these two cameras it comes down to what you want YOUR camera to do.
Do you want slightly better image quality(IMO) and some zoom? Then the G7 is for you. If you want big time zoom with a slight loss in picture quality(IMO) then the S5 is for you.
Both of these cameras have problems when compared to their predecessors. The G7 lacks RAW that was available on the G6, has in camera noise reduction and is shaped differently(problem for some). The S5 has more in camera noise reduction than the S3 and cost around $500 compared to the S3 which can be found under $300.
All that said.....the short answer IMO is that the G7 delivers better quality pics....slightly.:)

mmm.... since you're asking samples and such things, i advice you to read some reviews about the cameras you mentioned...
just google "canon s5 review", or "canon g7 review", you'll find a lot of info about those models, and surely you will be able to make an informed decision ;)

There was this exact thread not too long ago before the S5 was even released. Might try searching for that. It was active for awhile.

G7 is for everyday use. Excellent picture quality, easy handings and nice lens. But if you want some adventuring in the half professional photography life, then S5 IS is for you. My personal choice is S5 IS.
I think this help!

Given the significant price difference, I find it hard to justify the extra cash for the G7 now when it doesn't support RAW files anymore. With the S5 IS sporting a flash hotshoe as well, my money would go towards an S5 if I were looking for something small to supplement my full blown dSLR.
[edit] I take my words back. A quick check at B&H quickly revealed that both the G7 and the S5 IS are selling for $500. Now that makes things a lot more interesting...

Don't bother with the S5. It has a bigger screen and flash hotshoe but if you can live without those, save your money and get an S3 as the extra megapixels of the S5 do not equate to better picture quality. Also, there is a very good hack for the S3 that gives you raw mode.

^Ditto. I still say S3 all the way. Especially with the price of them now, you can't beat them really.
