Zoom is your friend.
You were essentially shooting the fireworks against nothing, so a huge picture with a small firework kinda stinks.
If you get a next time, zoom in. For these, just crop them a bit.

I think you are on the right track here.
the sillhouetted trees give perspective.
the early evening sky of the first shot gives a great color background.
you could experiment with longer exposures.
good shooting.
