I'll be is London next month with a group of basketball players and am looking for the best way (cost) to use the tube. Can you buy a 24 hour pass and take all the trips you want? If so, what does it cost? I've looked at the fare tables but I'm not sure which way to go.

I think we'll be spending 3 days doing things in central London, after that we have a charter bus to and from our games. Thank in advance for any help and advise.
btw, We play the Reading Rockets, London Leopards and the Milton Keynes Lions.

Yes. You can get day and week long passes. Most people get day passes if they're going to take more than 4 tube trains a day.
Personally, I'd say the bus offers a better option and safer too.

You're probably best getting a day travelcard if you only want a day of travel ... most people in London have an Oyster Card tho which is the best option and cheapest as you can just pay as you go. You pay a £3 deposit, I think, but journeys much cheaper. If you are travelling 2-3 days or more then really I would get one each. Newsagents have them, especially ones near hotels and tube stations. You just touch the card to a reader at entry and exit and can top them up with 'cash' easily.

:)
hope you have a great visit
basketball is tops
you can buy a day pass to different zones ...areas within a certain distance in London..there are six zones I think
one includes to and from the airport and the pass can be bought at the airport before you catch the tube to the city right away
(save you money rather then buying it next day and travelling into the city the day you all arrive ...paying extra fares)
oops
just thinking , you maybe have arranged to have a coach waiting at the airport on your arrival so won't need the tube tkts. just then
you can use the pass all day/evening anywhere ...to whatever zone you have choosen (bus or tubes)
you can get a three day pass which is great value and no worries about having to purchase another for the 3 days
re the oyster pass...it is really great but may not suit what you require
a certain amount of money is paid and can use the pass anywhere on buses and tubes
(as with the other passes one day , three day or a weekly)
the oyster card is v. good for long visits.
if you don't use all the amount you paid on the oyster card on this visit the card can be used on your next visit to London again and just use up whats left over
you'll figure out what you'll need
the passes are great value and have great ease of use
the system is great.
its up to you and your friends the amount you wish to pay in and can judge what you think you will need at the time just top it up as you need then
but better to pay enough to stop any worries about 'is there enough money in it' not to have to go to the ticket office too often and just enjoy every minute
happy travelling and good luck with the team
from what you mention ....... I think the 3 day pass will suit your needs
edit
sorry just saw the other replies
hope I am not repeating things

Thanks guys, it looks like a 3 day pass will work best.
We do have a coach to/from the airport and games.

I missed the bombings on the tube by around about 15 minutes, lucky me. 2 years later I'm back in london - 3rd week back there - another bomb plot around the corner. I'm still using the "Tube", you have to get on with life, not give in to these Headcases - they think they're gonna have a great time in Heaven - Brainwashed Morons.
Enjoy London, It's busy that's for sure - especially around 430 - 6pm, on the tube - packed solid, hot n sweaty, but you can break your journey up. Most places are only a couple of minutes away anyways, so you can always come up for air.
Have a great time here.
PM me if you're in Central London - stop by and say hi, & take coffee (8 - 3)
I'll be in Kensington and using the Tube the first three days.
Looks like we'll be buying 3 day cards.
Any Starbucks in the area around the Holland Park station?

Starbucks are everywhere! Also, "Pret" & "Eat" - which is particularly good, as they use organic everything.

Ok OP asked for information about London Tube and instantly it is turned into a political discussion about safety in London vs USA.
I have deleted all posts about that.
Stay on topic or the thread will be locked and there might be further consequences for certain involved individuals.

I'm a London worker. Pay the £3 ($6) deposit for the Oyster card and load it up via prepay or get a pass valid for the time you are there. DO NOT pay for single tickets at the ticket machines, the prices there are set up to fleece tourists! A single journey in central london will cost you £1.50 ($3) on Oyster, or £4 ($8 ) for cash.

I agree with foxbat - we'd like our visitors to go home having had a good time and not with the feeling that they've been fleeced! Enjoy your trip!

The travelcards allow you access to the Tube and Bus network so don't forget that you can use either. Some of the Routemaster red buses are still in operation, decommisioned in 2005 so being phased out, give one of them a go for the nostalga :-)
For over land rail journeys around London (inside zone 6 but NOT including the airport trains - you need to buy a ticker) you can also use your travel card.
Also, the Thames has water taxis which are great fun for the views and a trip on the Thames :-) And you get a 33% discount with a travel card :-)

I thought a number of the Routemaster buses were being kept on specific routes, for tourists, as a result of the outcry about their decommissioning. Am I wrong?
rammy

Yeah, there are some still in use which is why I said some are still in operation but they have been decommissioned in "general" across all routes. Sorry for the confusion. I think the heritage routes have a few running on them but don't know how many or for how long. They do seem to run on and on though :-)

Now the Oyster card is starting to look better then the travel card with capping and refunds.

I told yer that already pal ;-)
Take no notice of geezers who don't live or work in London. Oysters are good for bus and tube and some limited overland train journeys.

I got my 25mm Canon tube in the mail today. I thought it was white like the TCs.
It's fun though.

What is the cost at McDonalds in London for a Big Mac, fries, and medium Coke?

What is the cost at McDonalds in London for a Big Mac, fries, and medium Coke?
It's about £3.20 (maybe a little less cause I usually have large fries and a milkshake - yumm, fatten me up!) although they do have a "pound saver" menu which might make it cheaper. Current exchange rate with USD makes that around $6.40
How much is it in the US? I did have a Wendy's Burger in Boston, Mass which was tasty but very greasy and square :-)
