So, I work in a camera store and today we got in the new S5IS.
The LCD screen is super crisp!! And the face detction technology actually tracks the face if the subject is moving! MOVING I say!!!!!!
Hot shoe, 2.5 frames per second in continouse mode, 1600 ISO, and fully manual if you want. It is a sweet camera.
If you are trying to decide between that and a S3IS....S5IS!

It wasn't bad at ll...it seemed a little faster than the S3IS.
The continuous mode did seem slower though but we were in the stock room with it and not on the floor wher itis brighter.

According to Canon specs the continuous mode is slower then the S3's.

Guess that depends on who's buying it. A first time buyer of the S series that planned to use it for years to come may find the hot shoe alone worth the extra two hundred bucks. Using slaves to extend flash range is not too good compared to a powerful dedicated flash.

I bought the S5 two weeks ago and returned it. However, I just bought a S3 yesterday as it was more than CAD$200 cheaper. Frankly, I don't think the S3 owners should upgrade to S5 unless the hotshoe is absolutely necessary for you. Otherwise, I honestly do not see a lot of difference in IQ other than the S3 has a bit more CA on the long-end of the zoom range.

Played with one in Best Buy the other day. So0o0o0o not worth it to the nth degree. Sure the screen is bigger, for whatever you need that. ISO doesn't make up for much and the hot shoe is nice, but sometimes the point of the S3 (at least for me) is so I have something smaller.
$200 more is not worth it and like above, the IQ is very similar. What are you paying $200 more for is what you have to look at. A hot shoe and 1600 ISO which still doesn't perform that well since they upped the megapixels.

I can see where it would be worth the difference to some, and not others. The point is, if it is worth it to someone, then $200 is just not very much money in the year 2007.

I ordered the S5 IS from Adorama... $449.95. They have the S3 IS for $293... a difference of a measly $156.95. For a hot shoe and DIGIC III, it seemed like an easy decision to me to get the S5 over the S3. I'll know more when I actually get the camera (should arrive tomorrow). I have an S80 now and love it... just needed something with a longer reach and better flash capability.

well if $200 is not to much for some people why not throw in another $50 and get a rebel xt?

Since Skip has taken over my Pro 1, I have been seriously considering this camera for my P&S needs. I am doing 2 weeks in Itay in the springtime and I have decided to leave my big gear home this time. Sounds like the S5 IS will do well for travel and keeping in my car.

Good point except I'm having trouble finding an XT with the range the S5/S3 has for that amount of money. Could you point me in that direction?:D
Just kidding bud.;)

I fondled an S5 at Best Buy today. Very, very tempting. I did like that live histogram feature.

Does the S5IS (and any of its siblings) have manual focus? I am thinking of one for aerial work but need to be able to have the ability to keep the focus at infinity, can't have the mechanism on the hunt every time I depress the shutter release with AF.

Yes, the S5IS can be used in Manual Focus in all modes except AUTO and SPORTS.
The specs of every camera must be checked individually to confirm MF though.

All the S series camera's from s1 through to the s5 do have a manual focus mode, they just take some getting used to.
