Image Stabilizer 75-300mm lense

Does anyone have this new "image stabilizer" lense? I am very interested in purchasing it and am wondering if it does in fact help reduce shake, especially if you are not using a tripod.

Which lens are you referring to?

If you mean the EF 75-300 4.0-5.6 IS USM, that's not exactly a 'new' lens if I am not mistaken... you'll find a lot of information about that lens in many of the threads on the board here ... you might try a board search.

There is a new 70-300 4.5-5.6 DO IS USM lens that uses diffractive optics, but is also a lot more expensive (1200$).

i have an older 75-300
i does reduce lens movement considerably
the older 75-300 we poorly rated at the longer settings
i have notices lack of sharpness at 300 but for the price it is all that i can afford
i got it used for 200.00
it is possible the newer ones have inproved sharpness
i think it is a good carry around lens if the need sometihing that long
i carry it because i see a lot of wildlife where i live
do a forun search on 75-300 IS and you will see a lot more...

I'll post a PM that CDS sent me when I asked about this lens. I have the non-IS version of it and like everyone said, it is o.k. for the money but not the greatest. I decided to hold out until I can convince the wife to get the 100-400 L.

BTW, How is your "star" doing after his "magazine cover"? :D

I'm not sure there is anything I can recemond at $500.00 or under.. (that is not to say that there isn't anything out there,. just that I don't know of anything at that price that I would recommend..)

SO what I would recomend is that you NOT upgrade the 75-300mm untill you are able to spend just a bit more.

These are some very good options;

1. Either a Canon 70-200mm f/4 or Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 and a 1.4X t-con Approx $550.00 -$620.00 for the lens and another $150.00-$250.00 or so for the T-con

2. Sigma 100-300mm f/4 approx $700.00 plus 1.4X t-con approx $150.00

3. Canon EF 300mm f/4 L IS $1,140.00 plus 1.4X t-con $250.00

4. Canon EF 400mm f/5.6 L $1,099.00


The two primes would be the much better choice in the long run,. but the cost is double what you wanted to spend.. this leaves ony the 70-200mm zooms that will offer the kind of quality I could recomend,.. and the Sigma 100-300mm f/4 which is in fact just as good,. if not better than the Sigma 70-200mm for image quality and it offeres the extra lenght you are used to. It too will work with the 1.4X t-con... so that is a nice plus.

Re 1.4X Teleconverters.. the Sigma is about $150.00 the Canon about $250.00

If you get a Sigma lens I definatley recomend the Sigma T-con,. and that saves you another $100.00 Also,. the ONLY lens listed that would even be capable of woring with a 2X and still offer autofocus is the Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8... but 2X T-cons are't that great.. they hurt the image a little too much for my taste.

I have still been trying to master the nature photography thing. I have a couple better ones of heron's, but still need more.

Also, I am doing a photoshoot the next 2 weekends at dog shows at Lakeland and Orlando, and am trying to expand my portfolio. I am trying to start that as a side business.
