I was finally able to visit a real photography shop today (none in my hometown). I have been planning on purchasing the much recommended Bogen/Manfrotto 3021 with 488rc2 head. This particular shop had the 486 head. They also had Giotto legs and heads. The Giotto ballhead was (IMO) nicer than the Bogen ballhead. It was easier to adjust and tighten. When the head was loosened, it didn't loosen as much as the Bogen which would cause the camera to fall. The Giotto legs were lighter, but a little more expensive. I will probably stay with the 3021. I haven't read too much about the Giotto heads, but would appreciate any input/opinions.

i bought the 3021 BPRO legs and the 488RC2 head last week. i too wondered about Giottos brand, did a search and didnt get much from tte site, so i asked and didnt get any responses. so i just drew my own conclusion that not many use their stuff? probably not fair for me to assume that, but i did?
today i did see a giottos head (1000) in person and must admit the finish was beautiful compared to the Bogen/manfrotto. also like you said it seemed that the knobs locking were easier to me?
i still may consider getting one of their heads?
good luck
Brian

I was considering the giotto MH-1000 and heard some very variable reviews and the weight's quoted are generally much larger than the actual max load. So I just went with a 488RC2 which I've been extremely happy with.

i have heard the same thing about the weights (max load) not being so accurate? whether this is true or not i personally dont know? that too is why i went with the 488CR2.

I'm actually not too worried about max load...I don't even know what the 1000 is quoted as being able to handle. I won't ever have more than a 30D and a 70-200 on it. I just felt the build quality and use seemed better than the Bogen. I wonder why there isn't much feedback on the Giotto products.
