OK I go take my fully charge 400D in to an old place place I set the camera up up and then turn it on, then all of a sudden the batteries seem to die and the camera shuts off. but when I exit the place and turn the camera back on to check the battery life again it's full and I have about a good long charge on the battery. What gives?

Hiw old is the battery. I have seeen some of my batteries of a period of use simply die for no apparent reason and they appear to be charged- they do have a life so maybe your battery is at its end. Try Sterlingtek for replacements - theirs seem to work fine and the are inexpensive. Dennis

Have you tried merely half-pressing the shutter button after the camera powers down?
My 20D will "go to sleep" after a pre-determined amount of no-activity time, and tweaking the shutter button brings it back to life every time.
