Well, I finally did it - I went long! After much internal debate, I finally broke down and bought this:

And this morning, I used it to make this:

Handheld, f/5.6, 400 mm, 1/160 sec. with a little unsharp mask. 100% crop.
IS rocks!! 8)

Very nice moon shot. I am jealous. My brand new 100-400 just got delivered a few hours ago. It's been thundering and raining ever since it arrived. So far, I got a picture of a wet squirel and that's all. HAve fun with your new lens.

Hey! That looks familiar. Actually, they both look familiar.
Great shot of both the moon and the lens. I've only had a chance to use mine a couple of times since I got it last Thursday. And it's a good thing I got my moon shot Thursday night. We've been raining and cloudy ever since. But I'll get to use it a lot this weekend.

Birds? I'll probably get arrested with it, as I practice panning cars along the local freeway!
I haven't shot too many things with it yet, but I am very happy with the contrast, color, and sharpness of most of what I have shot so far.
It even works with my Sigma 1.4X telecon (thanks, Ian), which means that if I get up early enough tomorrow, I'll have the tripod out and will have an even better moon shot. (I may need to learn that tape trick, though).

 Don't do it. I nearly caused an accident doing something simillar. I was practicing by standing on a bridge over a major motorway. After a while I noticed that as the cars passed they all slowed dramatically with some late minute panic breaking... Obviously they thought I was the police with speed detection gear. I left before there was a pile up.

Woohoo! Congrats, Tom! Now you're all set for the next GCPS. If you start thumbing rides now, you may just make it in time for the next one, once someone decides when that's going to be! ???

I must say that I'm growing to really like this lens. I've done enough testing and experimenting with it to know that it is very capable. I'm impressed by the clarity, color rendition and richness, and contrast of the images. Its just really, really nice!
And, did I mention that the IS rocks? ;)

I like the photo of your lens more than the moon. The moon I can see for free, your lens is a beauty, on the other hand, that I don't see too often. :P

Congrats on your purchase :)
P.S - It looks like you have the only silver 100-400 in the World :P

Congrats on the new lens. I just got mine a couple of weeks ago along with the 17-40. The 100-400 has rarely been off my camera. One thing to watch for though. Make sure you've "tightened" it up a bit before moving with the strap around your neck. The thud of that thing sliding from 100 to 400 is pretty unnerving! I've gotton better but every once in awhile. THUD!

I had always assumed the 100-400L came with a kaki vest from the factory. ???

Both shots are nice.... :D
I am just finishing wiping the drool off my keyboard. The 100-400 has been on my next lens list. Hopefully, soon.
