I am having problems reseting my viewfinder focus points in my EOS 20D. At the moment it is on multiple points and I want to change it to centre point only as I prefer this for photographing people. I followed the instructions in the book but cant get it to work. I hold down the af point button for 6 secs but the af points dont come up in the viewfinder or on the lcd screen.
Any advice please??

Page 68 in your manual. Hold down the AF point button, then rotate the main dial until you get the point you want.

Like I said, I followed the instructions in the book but there is no response in the viewfinder or on the lcd screen so no matter how much I rotate the dial, nothing happens.

Like I said, I followed the instructions in the book but there is no response in the viewfinder or on the lcd screen so no matter how much I rotate the dial, nothing happens. You probably have to put the "off"/"on"/"dial on" rotary switch into the "dial on" position. That's two clicks away from the "off" position.

You may also need to rotate the exposure mode dial to something other than the "picture" settings (in other words, P, Av, Tv, or M).

Go to Custom Function CF-10 make sure its set to On
Go to CF-13 choose 1 Muli Controller if you want to use the little eraser tool(pressing directly on it will set it to the center focus point once there you can select another point as desired by gently rocking your finger. To return to the center point again just press directly on it) or #2 if you want to use the main control wheel.

Well I managed to change it using the stubby little button you use to move around pictures on the screen. I still can't understand why I am getting nothing on the lcd but I will count my blessings for now as its doing what I need.

The 20d will not display anything on the lcd untill you push the shutter and take a shot. It is not like a point and shoot camera.
Re-read the manual

I still can't understand why I am getting nothing on the lcd but I will count my blessings for now as its doing what I need.No Canon (or Nikon, for that matter) DSLR camera (with one exception - a special 20D made for astrophotography) can display what the lens "sees" prior to capturing an image. That's because there is both a mirror and a closed shutter blocking the path of the light between the lens and the sensor. The mirror reflects the light from the lens upward to the focusing screen (which you see through the viewfinder optics). When you press the shutter release (fully - not just halfway), the mirror flips up out of the way and then the shutter opens to expose the sensor to the light.

The only image(s) you can ever see on the DSLR's LCD display are those that have been recorded already.

I wasn't talking about the screen on the back I was talking about the small screen on the top of the camera, the book says it should display the focus points after holding the focus button for 6 secs.

When you press the focus button, the focus points are displayed for 6 seconds. There will be a pair of brackets [ - ] with a dash or multiple dashes to indicate which point has been selected.

At last someone who understands me :D

This is what I thought but it is not happening so should I presume there is a problem?

Check CF 13, it should be 0 or normal. The display will not show if set to 1 or 2.

Check CF 13, it should be 0 or normal. The display will not show if set to 1 or 2.I never saw my 20D's upper display show that before. However, I always leave my AF point set to the center point. I had chosen the center point by setting Custom Function 13 to a value of 1 and using the multicontroller (the 'joystick') to make the selection. Then I set Custom Function 13 back to a value of 0. I either never learned or completely forgot about the AF Point Selection/Enlarge button being used for anything but zooming in on a displayed image.

To rakirun - Check Custom Function 13, and set it to a value of 0. Then, tap (don't hold) the AF Point Selection button (the right button of the two at the upper right of the camera's back). Then push the multicontroller ('joystick') straight in to select the center focus point. After that, just never press the AF Point Selection button
