I have an extra 540ez sitting around and wondering if it will work with the transmitter?

I'm thinking of buying a ST-E2 transmitter.

No, it won't. The ST-E2 only controls the EX series flashes 420EX and up.

will an aftermarket tramsmitter setup work with it?

Not sure what you mean by "aftermarket" transmitter but in any event, the 540EZ does not have any type of remote slave capability built into it. You might be able to trigger it (at least once) by plugging it into an optical slave unit but I can't tell you how well that's going to work.

thank you!

PacAce,

The optical slave stubbornness of the EX series flash units, does not seem to infect the EZ series. At least not on the 540EZ and 420EZ.

I have tried garden variety optical slaves on both the 540EZ and the 420EZ and they work fine.

So, Canon certainly knows how to make a sophisticated flash that is not so cantankerously with optical slaves. But, they also know how to make a sophisticated flash units that are very uncooperative (the EX series).

Enjoy! Lon

Thanks for the info, Lon. That's good to know (although there's no telling how long or short it'll be before I forget it  ).
