I would love a page or statistic that could be placed on the site that tracked the number of unique IP's that have visited in the past "n" minutes. I sometimes check my pages viewed counter and then refresh and find a handful of pages have been served. Would love to know if it is one person or several. A secret page, public page, whatever. Would be cool to have a 5 visitors currently viewing photographs, etc. type of report.

You can usually get this information from your Hosting package. Most host providers will give you access to Web logs and statistics using things like webalizer or Awstats

Alan, I don't mean server statistics like can be garnered from the utilities you mention. I mean something like is at the bottom of many web forums like this one.
In total there are 77 users online :: 25 Registered, 2 Hidden and 50 Guests [ Administrator ] [ Moderator ]
Most users ever online was 325 on 02 Apr 2004 11:44
Registered Users: aam1234, blackviolet, burkdog, coldspot, gail, Jesper, JoseC, kd6lor, LaurentiuB, maderito, mapollo, Meerkat17, msbc, NickSI, nzl-g3user, Roy NN7DX, rudrasen, Scottes, shortie, spaceman, vansteve, walkien, yallcome, Yorick, Zangarh
Since the EE does not require registration of users, it would need to insert into a list, the time and IP of a visiting guest. With each hit, the IP would be compared to the list, and if the IP exists, the time would be updated. If the IPs in the list were older than "X" minutes, they would be deleted from the list. The number of IP's in the list would be counted and displayed "There are 10 users online" maybe in the news area, or where total count of images is stored on the front page. I am assuming that the PHP code can retrieve the IP of a visiting user. If so, this should be able to be implemented.
Have you come to your website and wondered how many people have visited in the past hour? Or Past 20 minutes? I would love to know!

PHP Open Tracker can be used for some of this.
See http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=11327&highlight=
Its at http://www.phpopentracker.de/en/index.php
I used this in old EE 1.2. Have not put it into 1.5 as yet.
