I’m considering taking the leap to digital and have been looking at the 1D (Mark II) or 1DS.

My primary interest is natural history photography and I frequently mount cameras over bird perches / nests / feeders / water holes etc and fire the shutter remotely using either a LC-4 or modified radio remote. This whole technique is frequently hit and miss since it is very difficult to position the camera exactly (the bird is never present when setting up). Additionally, it is almost impossible see what the bird it doing at up to 100m (even with a good pair of binoculars / spotting scope) as you are rarely at the same angle as the camera and visibility is often obscured.

Now my question…… I have noted that most digital bodies have a video line out. What is the range over which this will operate?? If I could watch on a battery powered monitor it would massively increase my ability to capture specific events. The LC-4 has a range of about 100m and although 100m of screened cable would a fairly heavy it could be the answer to the above problem - has anybody tried this and what sort of results did you get??

Also would using a line out (video) place a massive drain on the camera battery??

Many thanks, Andy

That won't work. The video out only allows you to view the pictures that have already been captured, and that's it. No monitoring.

I'm not sure how that works when connected to a computer (through USB) instead of a monitor through the video out..

i will anxiously be watching this thred because i need to do the same thing with my digital rebel
i have been using a motion sensor shuuer release with some success
it is problematic particularlt with blowing leaves setting off the sensor
i need to refine my system but for now i am using a mumford time machine
http://www.bmumford.com/photo/camctlr.html
which has capacity for shtter motion sensors and time lapse and...
i know this is not what you are asking but i thought you might find it interesting...
