Why do people keep asking me this?!!

Twice on Sunday, once last Wednesday and it usually happens every couple of weeks

Its only a 20D with a 24-105 on the front!! Heaven forbid when I put my 400 on. Perhaps I should start lying because you can always see a modicum of diappointment in their eyes when you tell them you're just playing with your hobby.

I can tell people I'm working for small music magazines but people still look disappointed :p

The disappointment is probably because they're not going to be famous since you're not going to put them in a paper! ;)

I get that all the time, and I live in a one paper town with ONE PHOTOG WHO HAS BEEN HERE FOR YEARS.....LOL

They still think that just cuz I have impressive looking gear I am getting paid.....LOL...Oh well, I take it as a complement now...

Yeah, I was at an Orchid show earlier this year with my 5D, 100 Macro and 580EX flash.

A couple of elderly ladies came up to me smiling and asked me "Sir, do you work for a magazine?". As soon as I said "No I don't. I do this as a hobby" they stopped smiling and walked away.

LOL!

I brought my 70-200 to the park with me today - it was so hot, no one was there - and I figured I could use that as my excuse to play with the lens while my son was playing in the sandbox without others thinking I'm some sicko. So one woman shows up with her kids as I'm photographing a tree and says, "are we interrupting what you're doing here?" I was like, "No. I'm just trying out this lens." She said she thought I was doing some nature photography for a magazine or something. It's kind of annoying when you're learning and people assume this stuff. Although that lens does beg for attention I guess. But, at the moment, it's the only one I have.

You'd think members of the non-photog public had never seen an SLR before

Its not as if we see people driving a sports car sitting at the traffic lights and assume he's taken a wrong turn at the chicane

You could have been accused of blatant 'herbophilia'

Tell me about it man! Just keep an eye out for the nice ones ;-)

I was out testing my new 1.4ex with my 70-200 and new 30D in my local area on a Saturday and I was stopped or questioned or had people walk by with comments and questions so many times about what I was doing that I tried to find places I could hide so I could concentrate.

It is nice to talk to peeps, I did have a nice conversation with an old dear who had a 10D but you never get anything done! Fit girls though, I don't mind at all :-) I have ll the time in the world for them and will even let them touch it. The lens!!!!!!

It happens from time to time - I usually just tell them I'm a freelance or stringer.

I thought Jimmy Olsen was the photog; but evidently he shoots Minolta (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/b/b0/JimmyOlsen01.png).

I was shooting my first wedding @ a restaurant a few weekends ago & one of the customers asked me if I was a paparazzo... I told them yea, I heard that Paris Hilton was coming to that particular restaurant in Albuquerque...

You could try any of these:-

Sorry for this... but...

Pesaroso is not a portuguese word. The correct sentence is:

"Peço desculpa mas eu não falo Inglês." witch means "I'm sorry but i don't speak English"

I apologise, but I am English and this was meant to be light hearted :-)

But I didn't do too badly for the 7 other languages I try to speak, the missing one is Welsh

I've told a few folks "I'm freelance, why, have you seen something interesting that I should get a shot of?" It's a great conversation starter.

I always get a chuckle from people who get upset when people ask them about the gear they use, or ask them who they're shooting for.

When that happens to me, I just look at it as polite interest.

It's silly to get wigged out about it...

I was at a Phillies game and shooting my XT with the 70-300 zoom (granted I did have on the grip and was using a monopod) and was asked if I was with a Philly or Houston newspaper. The oddest part about the question is I was wearing a Phillies hat at the time.

i get more annoyed by the people who walk around actually trying to make it look like theyre working for a newspaper, when its completely obvious that they dont. at least, its obvious to us. i saw a guy with a brand new tamrac backpack loaded to the gills with who knows what kind of random photo stuff. he even left all the tags on the strap, which had "Photo Backpack" written all over them. funny thing is, i never saw him take a single picture with his camera.

i dont mind the comments too much, as long as random people on the street dont tell me how to take pictures. that bugs the crap out of me. i just feel like saying, "lady, go to college for photography, then maybe we will talk about how to take pictures." i cant wait until i have my degree, then i can maybe get some respect. most likely not though, since having a degree means nothing anymore.
