ant carrying a live caterpillar. only could get a few shot in focus :( . must have shot over fifty and only got three decent one. how can i get higher keeper rates? aghhhh

i'm using a 30D with the canon 100 macro. exif are
TV - 100
AV - 2.8
ISO 400
and i had it on sport mode didn't realize it was on that usually i have it set on AV OR TV

Was the aperture set at F2.8 ? (wow) - if it was well you need to get it to at least F11 and above if possible .
Dont you have a flash unit ? .

yea it was at 2.8 i wasn't even looking at it. too busy trying to focus. yes i have the 430 EX. it was sunny out today, should i use it even though it was bright outside?

Well most people use the flash whatever the conditions - it helps you increase the aperture as far as possible.
I assume most people use the flash - at least i do anyway - look at the thread above - about peoples setups :) ...

f2.8 gives very little depth of field so you were lucky to get any detail, f6 is my minimum for 99% of macro work, f8-11 being the norm. It has to be pretty bright outside to be able to use f8 without flash and keeping ISO down to noise free levels.

Hi Bill, you done well with such a large aperture but what RM says goes. I nearly always use flash and setting of iso 200, shutter 1/200, and aperture f8-11. I find diffusing the flash is a good idea also.

Comments as above to increase the DOF, but ants doing things like this are particularly hard- always moving- you did well.
