View Full Version : Drift Demo @ Brands Hatch 1st July

The Autoglym Drift Team did a demo at Brands last weekend.
For those that have never done the drifting thing before, the usual photographic rules applied, although they were moving a little bit slower than a car if it was racing 'properly' around the hairpin so shutter speeds needed to be a little bit lower than you'd normally go for this corner.
The Historics had dumped a load of oil so there was loads of errr...oil dry down which may have hampered the skidding efforts and tyre smoke, but hey, it was good fun.
Here goes;
Started off on 1/200s so I could find my feet

Bit slower shutter

nice series!!!
Good work on figuring out a good shutter speed. even though 1 was shot at a higher speed, I still like it a lot!

i really love the tyre delamination one (and the result)

Only had 4 passes to get them as well!

I hope it was more successful than the last drifting demo I saw at Brands; Some "Drifting World Champion" stuck it into the armco on his first lap and wrecked the rear end of his car. I didn't get many decent shots, I was too busy laughing.

:D hahaha not surprised!
They didn't end up at the beach this time. A few spins but nothing too silly.
They did a few laps in the wet on the Saturday as well, now that was bonkers. I was too busy with dead batteries to catch them though.

I've seen those boys a couple of times this year. Didn't bother to take any photos... think I was eating munch at the time. But they were wicked!! Good fun, great way to kill 10 mins during lunch or between sessions.
At the DTM meet one of them blew up, looked like after finishing a run as it was outside the grandstand at the top of Paddock. Oil and smoke everywhere... oops haha

Nice panning job on #2. What shutter speed?

Nice one Dave, specially #2...shame they couldn't have obliged with some tyre smoke for you. It's a good laugh when they go around in pairs :D
It's a bit of an acquired taste this sideways-squealy-smoky stuff and i'm still undecided but it's a decent day out. I'll be at Knockhill in a couple of weeks for the next EDC round. The cars are very well turned-out though with some amazing workmanship involved.

The marshals and I were trying to work out what exactly is the point of drifting relative to motorsport. What next, ICE competitions run by the BRSCC? With apologies to those turned on by drifting, but it leaves me cold. Not a good ad for Toyo tyres either with that delamination.

Same here Ken. I'm sure it takes skill and all that but...what is the point?
I think it's a bit of a laugh really. Just a bit of fun.

its kind of like Synchronised swimming Vs the 100m freestyle
i love taking photos of anything moving fast but i prefer to watch drifting, there is more people spinning off into the dirt etc, and it takes just as much, if not more skill to drive sideways like that.
one of my mates calls it rallying crossed with a burnout comp
i have been for 3 laps of a local track in a drift car - it is an amazing experience - if you ever get the chance for a ride in a drift car - do it

I regularly ask the same question of things like 3 hour VW Beetle races :D

I suppose it increases the speed when turning sharp corner, like hairpin corners, so i heard. However, nowadays racers use this technique on pretty much any corner, even when they don't need to. Perhaps for entertainment?

The idea of drifting , the technique, was to scrub off speed by using the friction of the tyres, as opposed to the brakes. Unfortunately (imo), drifting has become a sport, where drivers are rated on entry speed and angle, which i think is stupid, so yes, basically, it is for entertainment.
