Really nice looking redhead there. I'd love to get a closer look at the one around here. :)
Looks like a juvie Green, or is he just molting?

Just goes to show that the onboard flash can come in handy on grey gloomy days. The shots look quite good and that is such a sweet species to have in your area.

Yes, it does but slows shutter to 1/250 Not much good for action shots.

Good shots. If you used the pop up flash I doubt it had any effect at 700mm.

Nice set of shots- It looks like the flash helped on a gloomy day. I've used a pop-up flash on feeder birds at dusk and it definitely helps. I'll have to try on gloomy days as well. The red headed chick was real cute (but, I'm a sucker for redheads!).

I'm really not a fan of using flash on wild things but in some cases it seems to be worth scaring them a little.

FYI- the 20d popup max flash range is 43', at f8 it's MUCH less, no effect at distance.

I'm not sure I needed the max flash but I feel I got a little help. I know that I got the Steely eye on several.

guide number of 20d is 43. at f/8 you take 43/8 =5.3 that is the range of the flash 5 feet, well at ISO 100. At 400 it's a little further 10 feet ;)

I believe you, you are far more knowledgeable on this than I. I just felt it helped but maybe it was the forced shutter speed and Exposure.

Great series. I love the little chick. How is it that you see all of these fantastic birds and I come across stupid sparrows and grackels? I love wood[eckers, and I hear them all of the time, but can never get close enough to get shots like this. I sat in a marsh one day for 4 hours, not moving other than to shift my weight off of my numb butt just to get a shot of a momma woodpecker and her chicks, and all I got was some poison ivy, a bunch of mosquito bits and photos what appeared to be an empty hole.
