Cannot play video clip on WMP 9

For a long time I have been able to play the video clips from my s230. Something happened to my computer (Windows xp) and wmp 9 says I have a corrupted file. I use Quicktime 6 and it can play the same file, so it is not corrupted. I think what happened is that wpm 9 is somehow damaged. I tried re-install and to no avail. I restore my system to earlier points, and wmp 9 can play the file, but eventually, I lost all my restore points as well by reinstalling wmp 9 again. So here I am, cannot play video clip with wmp 9. I know this is computer related question, but hope that some of you guys can help. My last resort is to re-install windows xp which I am reluctant to do. :( TIA.

what is the video file extension? WMP9 can play .AVI files but can't play .MOV files. QuickTime can play .MOV files

It is .avi file. As I said, I used to play these files until I did something (trying to install and uninstall some freeware, I bet).

yeah i get the same thing but im using wmp 10. i can view them through quicktime as well but not through wmp. this is the error msg i get
