... flower refraction :)
Noticed this lovely female soldierfly (Chloromyia formosa) down in the grass when I was doing some dewdrop refractions- couldn't resist the opportunity.

Thanks- yes I was using the MPE-65 but the pic is focus stacked from 5 shots.

Same technique used in this tutorial http://www.flickr.com/groups/macroviewers/discuss/72157594313729574/ but the dewdrop was on the back of the fly.

Thanks Adrian - exactly the same way as my normal flower refraction shots (tutorial here http://www.flickr.com/groups/macroviewers/discuss/72157594313729574/ ) but the dewdrop happened to be on the fly.

See http://www.wonderfulphotos.com/articles/macro/focus_stacking/ for a tutorial on focus stacking- it's a way of increasing the DOF in pictures by combining a series of shots taken at different focus depths of the same subject.

Thanks for the kind comments Alby, Brian and Gordon.- It's suprising how many times you do spot bugs down in the grass when you are looking for some nice dewdrops :)

Simply perfect.
You where there at the right moment and you catch it perfectly.
Congrats LordV.

Very nice - you'd think the creature would have been inconvenienced by that and tried to shake it off.
Or maybe it liked the aesthetic.. ;)

Hiya Brian,
Not only is it a Superb refraction shot/stack you nearly gota reflection shot also in that droplet under the Flies wing joint & 2nd leg.
Your consistency amazes me
Cheers for now

Thanks Laurent :) I was lucky the soldierfly was cold and wet and was not going to fly anywhere for a while.

Thanks for the comment Jim.
It's fairly common to find bugs covered in dew first thing in the morning- they just wait patiently for the drops to evaporate in the sun- think they are probably too cold to do anything else.

Thanks Mark - yes I noticed the other drop under the wing - it's a pity the shot came out with high contrast (hard with these soldier flies- they are so reflective) so I couldn't lighten the shot much. I don't normally play around much with differential lightening on pics but could have tried using the dodge tool on it. I was just happy to get a decent refraction in the drop on it's back :)

Funny someone else made that comment but as I said if you are down on your hands and knees looking for suitable dewdrops to snap, and you spot a fly with one on it's back, your not going not try and use it :)
