Ok, so not the best, but this lady only came out late at night and moved like a speed demon any time I came near. She was a big girl measuring about 1 inch head to tail and a bit bigger including her legs. She was hiding behind the barn and I swear 100's of her friends were crawling all over my legs as I waited for her to come out of her hiding spot. ;) At least thats what my imagination kept telling me. :D

Nice capture, very brave :)Thanx
Is she dead?Oh no, very much alive and hanging on her web. BW webs are large and very stringy with no defined center. She would walk up and down chasing every little twang. I tried to toss in a moth but was not successful. Also, the are very skitterish and move surprisingly fast. I almost dropped the camera when I accidentally touched the web and she came investigating. Boy I wish I had the 180 instead of the 100. 6 inches is just to close. ;)

Haha you are far braver than I. Forget six inches I'd be six miles away.

That's what I was thinking...I take it there is an anti venon for the Black Widow spider bite? I know we have one for our Redback spiders, which are related to the Black Widow...

Thanx for the comments all. I actually did a little homework before venturing out behind the barn and it seems that the BW is not the deadly beast of lore. Though her bite is extremely painful to many, it is rarely deadly and most will experience some massive abdominal and heart pain. One interesting point that will get all of us guys a-groaning is that these little ladies were regulars in outhouses probably because of the treasure trove of bugs and spun their webs just under the hole. Well, a common bite location was on your... um... well, the thing dangling down the hole. Now that had to really hurt.

Haha oh dear, that's half funny and half frightening. I think I'd be miles away even if it wasn't poisonous, something about them just totally makes me fall apart. I'm fine with insects though, must be those extra 2 legs.

Yes, growing up I heard stories of people getting bitten on the a$$ by redbacks when they used outdoor "dunnys"

In fact there's a song about it by Slim Dusty if I remember rightly...

this exact thing happened to a friend of mine when we were out camping years ago,. I rant to the nearest phone and called teh hospital, they said they would not be there in time (we were out in the boondocks) ,.

they said to save him you have to suck the poison out of the wound...

I ran back to my friend, and told him,..

wait for it,.

My 80 year old mom was bitten by a Black Widow in February. The bite is still not totally healed, VERY ugly. She had no other problems except the nasty, nasty bite.
