..don't go into a Camera store!!!!!!!!!! :? :? :?
Well,. I went into a Camera Store.. I need a backpack that will fit the 500mm and the rest of my stuff... Been looking at them on l9ine.. but I needed to be sure MY stuff would fit.
Guy behind the counter was awestruck.. (they'd not seen a MkII yet.. ) as I dumped the contents of my "car trunk" bag and tried to shoehorn it all into the Tamrac Cyberpack along with a MkII on a 500mm prime..
Soon the majority of the employees were all hanging around watching...
O-kay I'll ge to the point..
Tomorrow I am going on a feild trip..
I will NOT have a use for the Monster 500mm...
But I'm not convinced the heavy 70-200mm IS will be long enough...
I walked out of the place with the BackPack AND...
...the 100-400mm L
Of course..
Don't go into a Camera store!!!!!!!!!!

CDS,
I think you need to find professional help  . It seems like you have the most gear of anyone on this forum. The camera store guys must have had dollar signs flashing in their eyes when they saw all your stuff.
Enjoy your 100-400. Mine just came in the mail a couple of days ago. Our local camera stores don't carry anything as expensive as a 100-400. B and H is the only source when you live out in the sticks. But that's good cuz it saves me from making impulse buys  .

I am truly sorry you had to endure this horrific experience. If it pains you too much to see the lens sitting in your backback, you can send it my way...

Luckily I do have this problem. For one thing, if I bought a 100-400L at my local camera store it would cost as much as a 600mm prime from B&H, and also I could not afford one even at the lowest online prices. :D
Problem solved. 8)

Ok so I was exaggerating a bit. :D But it would likely be well over $2000. :(

Congrats!! You will love that lens, it is great.
I just picked up the 70-200 L f/2.8, haven't used it yet. I also picked up the 85 L f/1.2, I have to work on a 500 but that is way in the future.
I know you will enjoy that lens, have fun and don't forget to post ASAP!!

don't go into a camera store
I know what you're talking about.... I am doomed though. Calumet photographic is about 2 minutes away from my work... and on my way home. Every time I stopped there I bought something... anything. From lenses to filters to monopods and some more... just last week the evil salesman (he's a cool guy though) almost convinced me to get the 17-40L
But I made a promise to myself to stop spending until the balance on my credit card is 0. At least no major purchases... or unless i find some great deals.
Thankfully my budget is recovering  (i'm selling all my Nikon accessories on e-bay, don't need them anymore. I'll make a couple hundred bucks)
Enjoy the lens, CDS. Maybe, one day, I will own one too.

That place is evil
Congrats on your new lens and bag. I know you'll do it justice.

Yeah, but my local camera shop makes Ritz Camera look like a Dollar store. I'm talking double internet prices on some items! Now I'm curious, though. I think I'll go there after work today and see what it would be. :D

Fortunately I don't have a problem going into my local camera store and walking out with a lens or grear I really want because...they either don't carry it or, if they do by some odd chance, they cost tooooo much!
I was there yesterday 'cuz it was supposed to be "Canon Day". The pitch was that people could go there and talk to a Canon rep and demo some of their new gear. So, I went over hoping to get my hands on a 1DmkII. Man, no such luck. The newest thing they had for a demo was the Pro1 (it's a lot smaller than I thought it would be but it sure looks cute and slick!). They also had a couple of P&S cameras along with a 10D, all sitting on top of a little 2-foot diameter round table. The sales rep was on one side and a couple were on the other side hogging the demo cameras with about a few other people behind the couple and waiting to get their hands on the demo gears. One of the guys waiting in line had two 1v camera bodies slung over his shoulders...not sure what he was waiting for unless he was there for the free body and lens cleaning they had advertised.
Needless to say, I was very totally disappointed. Total waste of my lunch hour!
But anyway, congrats on your new purchase. You'll now fit right in if you decide to participate in the next GCPS! You DO have a beige photo vest, don't you?

PacAce, you're lucky you don't have a bigger camera store over there. Calumet had a Canon day as well. They had 3 MkII for demo purposes. I wasn't TOOOO tempted because it was the day I got my Rebel, and the guy didn't want to trade one for a honda civic :P .That damed store carries most of the canon lenses... they have the big white&red boxes on a shelf right behind the counter so that everyone can see them too.... heartless bastards.

Noi kidding huh?
I kept trying to convince myself that with a 500mm Prime and the 70-200mm f/2.8 ... which I can put a 2X T_C on.. I just didn't need a 100-400...
Well,. just spent the better part of the late afternoon hammering away.. pics are downloading as we type :)
It's certainly a nice peice of glass!
Two Observation:
I was STUNNED at how lightweight it is.. ANY of you that claim this thing ois heavy is a total WUSS!!!!!!
It makes the 70-200mm f/2.8 IS seem like a howitzer! The 100-400mm feels HOLLOW by comparison! :)
AF.. very odd... when the AF is "close" it is pretty peppy.. but I've had NO lens that will "hunt" in slow motion the way this one will when it is perfectly confused.. not even super cheap super zooms... but it takes some tough circumstances to get it to that point. Other wise it seems almost exactly as ast as my Sigma 70-200mm EX was... which is pretty fast.. but it is clearly an older AF than the EF 70-200mm f/2.8 IS who's AF really kind of blows it away..
I'll try and get something uploaded .. (assuming anything I did today is worth looking at  )

I think that they're having "Quantaray Day" at the local Wolf Camera shop next month. :)
Actually, they've done a good job for me with enlargements and that kind of thing, but when I asked him if they had any Canon lenses, he told me that they don't carry that "high-end stuff".

Right, like I should be so lucky! Nope! No such luck. I think the only thing they were giving away were a bunch of cheesy looking ball-point pens. What would a Mont Blanc guy like me do with one of those pens, anyway? ???
Oh, yeah, they were also raffling off one of the P&S cameras but I forget which one.

And is why i'm staying away from a camera store. If I walk in I may just buy the same lens. I've been wanting that lens for awhile. and i know i shouldn't spend the money, but i'm afaird that if i walk in there i'll buy it.

-CyberPack 8- #5258
It will hold a body mounted on my 500mm prime.. this was the pre-requisite as I needed a way to get that monster on a plane..
I won't be bringing a laptop this time.. but the Cyberpack can hold a laptop as well,. and I know some day this will prove important to me..

I walked past a camera shop today (was even a Canon Pro Centre) and I didn't walk in and buy anything or even have a browse.
Mind you, it was Sunday and it was closed.

LOL. If you HAVE to walk past a camera store selling Canon equipment, I guess that would be the safest day to do it, when they're closed.
