well.... it's not a wide angle lens. If you take the crop factor into consideration it's a telephoto lens. It's a great little lens. Cheap.
Only con is that it's made out of plastic - fragile. I like that lens, I use it a lot.
www.cmuntean.net/images/macro.html - most of the pictures in there were taken with this lens
P.S.: if you do a search, you'll find a lot of info. It's been debated a lot

I just got the lens yesterday and so far I like it pretty well, although I have not yet gotten to test it much. I'm glad I still have my kit lens though, because that 18mm comes in really handy sometimes.

No reason why you shouldn't get this lens..it's dirt cheap and a very good lens.
the large aperture will allow you to do some creative DOF shots as well as shoot in lower ambient light.

Hi ,
my friend has the older 50mm f/1.8 with the steel mount not plastic.
Everyone tells me that older one was better coz it was built better.
Fine, I agree that it built better & will last longer.
But does it matter & how does it matter ?
OK, the newer lens is all plastic body, but its so light & compact.
I can understand getting a steel metal mount for a lens heavier than 1/2 Lb.
I don't see a point unless you are constanly dropping/banging/yanking your lens. Most of the folks are generally careful with their gear. So what is actual advantage of this older 50mm f/1.8 ?

Optically, there is no advantage. Apart from the steel mount, which you already mentioned, the only other advantage of the Mk I is the distance scale. However, the distance scale is next to useless, as it seems to be on almost all Canon EF lenses. I have a small collection of the old manual-focus FD lenses and the difference is like night and day.

I love my 50mm f/1.8 MkII for the results it produces ... Here are few samples from my gallery :

Most repatative threads annoy people (i'm rarely one of them) but i love the frequency that this thread pops up, because then i get to show off all my f/1.8 photos and if these arnt worth the $70 then i dont know what is.

I also have that lense and it is awesome, if you dont have big money to drop on "L" zooms then some of the cheaper canon primes are the way to go. A great setup would be the 28mm f2.8($160) the 50mm F1.8($80) and the 100mm f2.8 macro($400-$500). If you shop around you could prolly pick them up used for less than $500 bucks. Thats way cheaper than the 24-70mm F2.8L($1300) and would give you nearly the same image quality. Every one with a canon eos should have the 50mm F1.8, its a nobrainer.
