Noticed these stripes on the fence posts the other day and it got me wondering.

Excellent shots Alby - seen this with common wasps as well- you can actually hear them doing it - sound like a feint filing/rasping sound. Handy source of cellulose fibres for the paper nests.

Thanks Brian, I guessed that what they would be doing. Can't say I heard them though I was more concerned about being stung. :-)

Nice shots of an industrious little critter Alby.
As Brian said, common wasps also do this. I have filmed hornets doing it as well.

Thanks David, when you say filmed are you talking about movie film or stills as I have thought of getting a video camera one day and yes trying my hand at nature movies at a very amatuer level of course :-)

Hi Alby, When I retired seven years ago I bought a Canon DM-XM1 - the only Canon video camcorder fitted with a 'L' lens. I had a great deal of pleasure shooting with it, and have hours of good quality tape. I rarely use it now as it is so much easier to edit a still than editing video.
The DM-XM1 is on Ebay sometimes, I can thoroughly recommend it.

Edit: Some of my films are on my website here: www.dorsetscountryside.co.uk

I like your website and the videos a great. You've put a lot of work into it all and the results definitely show. I'm off to wareham forest in a couple of weeks so hopefully will get some good material on my short break.

Wareham Forest aye? It's great down there (from me) with so many different habitats. I'm off to 'Bandit County' (North Devon) in the morning. Will be taking all my comp. gear so hope to keep in touch with a different range of macros.
Hope the weather is kind to you Alby. Pleased you like the website.

Hi David, I went to North Devon last year , close to South Molton and had a great time. Some great countryside there and very picturesque. You will enjoy it I'm sure.

It's the first time I've noticed this species of wasp also Linda. It amazing quite what an eye opener this forum is. I've just got a real hunger for insect knowledge now.:-)
