Okay-
sorry if there is a thread out there..... I looked but only found threads about how much people love the ACR 4.1, how to work the new tools, etc.

I have PE5 and downloaded ACR 4.1 from the adobe site. Had to save it to a spot so made a folder on my c: drive. It doesn't work. Clearly I must need to save it elsewhere to make it work, but stuff like that freaks me out. If I don't know exactly where to put it I'm sure I'm going to make the computer implode (or explode.) Can someone tell me how to fix this? I really like the ACR 4.0 but would be really, really excited to use the 4.1 It will allow me to do a lot more....!!!

I appreciate the help. I'm slowly coming to love all of this RAW business, even though the work is monterous for me right now!

thanks in advance

I believe that ACR 4.1 only works with CS3, maybe you need to use ACR 3.7

EDIT: Mike's answer below is more accurate.

From the Readme file (http://www.adobe.com/special/photoshop/camera_raw/Camera_Raw_4.1_ReadMe.pdf):

Installation
This new version of the Camera Raw plug-in replaces the original Camera Raw plug-in that was installed with Photoshop CS3, Photoshop Elements 4.0 (Mac Only), Photoshop Elements 5.0 and Premiere Elements 3.0.
The Camera Raw 4.1 plug-in is not compatible with versions of Photoshop earlier than Photoshop CS3 or versions of Photoshop Elements earlier than Photoshop Elements 5.0 for Windows and Photoshop Elements 4.01 for Mac.
The latest version of the Camera Raw plug-in available for Photoshop Elements 3.0 customers is Camera Raw 3.6. The latest version of the Camera Raw plug-in available for Photoshop Elements 4.0 Windows customers is Camera Raw 3.7.
Photoshop CS3 and Adobe Creative Suite 3:
Automated installation on Mac or Windows®:
1. Select “Updates…” from the Help menu
2. Follow the on-screen dialogs to download and install the latest available Camera Raw update
Manual installation on Mac or Windows®:
Windows®:
1. Exit Photoshop CS3 and Adobe Bridge.
2. Open My Computer.
3. Double-click Local Disk (C:).
4. Navigate to Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Plug-Ins\CS3\File Formats.
5. Move the existing Camera Raw.8bi plug-in to another location (for example, a new folder on your desktop). Ensure you keep this version in case you need to revert back.
6. Copy the Camera Raw plug-in, Camera Raw.8bi, from the download into the same folder as Step 4.
7. Launch Photoshop CS3 or Adobe Bridge.
Mac:
1. Exit Photoshop CS3 and Adobe Bridge.
2. Open the Finder.
3. Navigate to the root of the local disk (not the user’s home folder).
4. Navigate to Library/Application Support/Adobe/Plug-Ins/CS3/File Formats.
5. Move the existing plug-in to another location (for example, a new folder on your desktop). Ensure you keep this version in case you need to revert back.
6. Copy the Camera Raw plug-in, Camera Raw, from the download into the same folder as in Step 4.
7. Launch Photoshop CS3 or Adobe Bridge.

Hi In2Photos-

Kinda knew you'd be my guy. Did as you printed out for me (I am a great direction follower!) but now it tells me I can't open the raw file b/c it is the wrong kind of file...... Yikes. All my photos are in there!

Here's a recap: moved the raw 8bi to another folder. madea copy and moved the new plug-in/ update to the file folder spot. Any ideas? other wise I'll just go back to my ho-hum and keep my hopes locked away forever.... ha!!

thanks again

The only thing possible is the wrong folder was used for the new file. Have you tried doing the Auto Update? Select Updates from the help menu and follow the instuctions. It should place everything correctly for you.

did you reboot?

if you are right clicking then choose open with, and then click the always use this program.

if you are double clicking to open do the above step once.

if you are opening from bridge then I don't know...
