I shot these guys for the second time last week. The first time they were at the casino they were very friendly but this time they seem preoccupied and rather than let me shoot all night as they did last time their management allowed three songs. So, I plopped in my earplugs, shot three songs and left for home. Not a very visually interesting three songs ... the lighting barely changed and they never moved from their spots. And since there are only four spotlights they weren't all spotlighted the whole time. EXIF and IPTC data are intact ... which includes the names of the members.

#1 Obligatory collage:

#2 He looks a bit pained to me:

#3 The other guitar

#4 Bass ... let's never saw they don't show expressions:

#5 Keyboards/harmonica (and air guitar):

#6 Drummer, also with expression:

#7 One I liked:

#8 Another I liked:

There are 21 images total on my website gallery at http://www.dwightmccann.com/ChumashCasinoResort/CCR07052007.html for you listening pleasure. Tomorrow night I shoot Lynyrd Skynyrd (I'm never sure if I spelled that right!)

Nice stuff Dwight.

Your collage doesn't have the usual *BANG* for me, but i suspect the boring lights have something to do with that.

Wow, no 4 looks like if he squeezed his head would explode!

The guy in 5 looks like he is going to fall asleep :D

The drummer shot is great. You can almost tell it was shot with one of Canon's finest... if only we all had a 300mm f2.8 IS at our disposal *dreams*

Nice work.

Lynyrd Skynyrd, awesome, that would be cool.
They are a pretty big group aren't they (numbers wise... i know exactly who they are).

brilliant work as usual dwight i only hope to eventually be able to produce pictures like you and the other regulars on here.
Your collages are always great "covers" for your sets. #8 is an awesome pic under some hard lighting. would you say #2, #3, and #7 could use a bit of cropping?

It's 3AM, I couldn't sleep, and am happy to find your new posting...
One of my all time favorite bands...# 7 is similar to a pic I got of them last year...It was a favorite with our local venue and they posted it on their Internet slide show...

The bass player was a lot of fun to photograph last year... He only made those faces a few times...

My favorite of this posted bunch, has to be the full stage shot in the collage... The only criticism I have here, is the lettering positioning of "Revisited". But I also don't have any suggestions for alternatives...maybe under the portraits instead... Your web site gallery has lots of excellent captures too. All the stage shots are very impressive and especially most of the close ups, too. What lens did you use for the stage shots, Dwight?

You're safe Dwight regarding the spelling...
Lynyrd Skynyrd, pronounced Leh-Nerd Skin-Nerd is spelled correctly... I checked it on Google... (I bet you're thinking of Lanyard.)

They were so very friendly, last early summer of 2006, that I'm also surprised they limited you to 3 songs...
This is a very good set overall, Dwight... Don't be too disappointed regarding their personal problems on the road/stage... Maybe they are real tired from pounding the pavement for so many years... I don't miss the road, or the 20+ years of daily hotels... It's way better to stay home and chill...

I hope to see them here in PA again someday soon... Great set Dwight...

hey dwight, on the collage...i'd prefer not to have the text run into the top row of photos...also, there's a 2nd 'e' in Creedence....

i just googled them, and it's the original rhythm section of CCR (ie, no john fogarty who wrote and sang all their original stuff).

the lighting and stage presence looks a bit staid, but there are some pretty nice shots; i like 7, and the full stage shot in the collage is well done too.

Thank you. Yes, pretty boring lighting and visuals. According to Wikipedia there are nine in the LS group. I'm not sure what I'll do for a collage, sigh. Can't have cutouts of that many. Heck, having so many people in a group who are headliners is what took the Bang out of this collage.

Thank you. Yes, they could have used a bit of cropping ... I was using LR 1.1 and diddling a little with some new controls and didn't attend to the total look. I really need to spend more time in post processing with the RAW images ... I can't imagine why people think RAW doesn't take more time than jpegs but it's a religious argument.

Thank you, John. There should be EXIF and IPTC in all the images but the only lenses I use for this quickies are 70-200mm f/2.8L IS and 300mm f/2.8L IS so I'm guessing 70-200mm on full stage shots! :-)

Nice set & collage again...
#3 and 4 look a bit soft?
Rene, yes, LR changed their sharpening controls and I dont' know how to use the new ones so I let it slide which, of course, you can't do when resizing, sigh. This is one of the reasons I wanted you to get LR 1.1 so I could ask ... in PhotoImpact the "wizard" does an excellent job.

hey dwight, on the collage...i'd prefer not to have the text run into the top row of photos...also, there's a 2nd 'e' in Creedence....

I screwed with the font, placement, color and style for an hour. I'm just horrible with graphic design although PhotoImpact tries to make everything easy you still have to figure out what to do. Anyway, I agree now that I have had some time to consider.

What is a 'rhythm section' when there is only one percussionist/drummer?

And I really appreciate the note on 'Creedence' ... it will save me a little embarrassment ... as soon as I get home tonight I will trash my prints, fix the collage, reburn CDs and print new collages ... and replace the collage on my website when I get a chance.

Thats exactly what I was going to say!

other than that I think the pics are great!
Well, I'm never going to approach the level of classy design that the POTN Poster Girl puts out so I'm not even going to feel bad about it!

dwight, the rhythm section of a band is the bass player and the drummer. they set the beat, the other players/singers provide the melody.

Thanks for the feedback Dwight...

I'll be using the 70-200mm 2.8L IS tomorrow night... and with IS, I hope to get some good stage shots too... The band and venue approved me for the very first time.

I've also got the Los lonely Boys and Air Supply to consider taking pictures at for next weekend... But I don't have permission to use the big lenses...

Can't wait for your Lynyard pics... he really is popular at all country bars throughout all the states...

Lynyrd isn't a band member, just like Jethro Tull isn't a band member. :p

i think that the band took there name from their gym teacher, leonard skinner? jethro tull was a guy from the 17th or 18th century who invented the seed drill.

Cheers,
I thoroughly understand about the collages. They are a contractual requirement that haunts me ... although they have forced me to learn a lot of stuff I could otherwise have avoided but that has stood me in good stead and I am actually happy to have gotten into. Perhaps the biggest stumbling block is that they need to show the 'production design', that is the stage setup, which severely limits the options. Even the EW&F where I blurred the edges was criticized. So, I need to have a clear, full shot of the stage to the extent possible, plus text and logos all made from these live concert shots. I spent a lot of time looking at the PR images that are hung on the public walls at the casino and made from PR kits. They almost always start with staged studio images of posed performers, don't involve working in any stage sets and even then are often very soft/blurred and are generally very warm toned. So, while I realize that most criticism about my collages are on artistic merits, they are 'documentary' rather than 'artistic' and will never be as pretty as less constrained works. And I do get the images, too! I should start a thread in the contest area where people can take my images from my website and build collages and post them so I can see what others come up with.

But no harmony?:lol: Ah, I didn't realize that the bass player was a rhythm person ... I really thought of bass as bass clef harmony ... that is, making up the low end of chords. Thanks for the clarification.

You'd think, I would know that... I certainly listen to all of their hits on the radio... No wonder I never saw any of "his" individual pics anywhere... Well "live and learn"...

Tull, I've known of, and listened to since 69-70... Used to party to their albums all the time...Bouree' was one of my favorites...
I had/have "Stand Up" "Aqua Lung" and "Thick As A Brick"...

Anyway, Dwight corrected me last year on the Band's "Creedence Clearwater Revival" name when I posted here...

Yeah...It used to be a lot easier to just hire out an office administrator and have her proof and type my writing...

Sometimes, being on one's own now, kinda sucks...

Anyway, why sweat the small stuff? The greater task was capturing the images and post processing them... The rest is supposed to be down hill from here... :D

I like the newest collage with the framed portraits... It diversifies your sets of work. Besides, it's only the spacing of the lettering, that we all seem to think needs a slightly different alignment.

I vote for placing "Revisited" beneath the framed portraits...

not a bad idea...but with those limitations I understand the collages a lot more now...

as always your work in that arena is impressive...always get the shot no matter the limitation...

Thanks. I know I have a terrible problem with that 300mm f/2.8L IS and cutting off headstocks, arms, legs, etc., etc. I should probably throw it out.

Dwight...myself being one that prides himself on being "green" and always hoping to be a positive force on POTN, I will gladly pick up your 300 2.8 to make sure it is properly disposed of in an eviromentally correct manner. It's the least I can do for someone always willing to give help and feedback. ;)
