So. I dont believe there is a lens thread for this one yet. So as a new member i thought i should contribute in some way. So here are some pictures taken with said lens during spring break in california. And im a high school-er who's new to photography, so go easy on me. If you guys are interested in this lens maybe i shall post more and variations in photo genres. Cheers!

Nice pics. This is the first lens I ever bought. It is quite capable, but a bit soft on the wide end. But that's to be assumed.

Here's two shots taken at the same spot on the pier. One at 18mm and the other at 200mm. This lens has great reach when you need it.

I know this is an old thread but I'm thinking of selling my 17-40L and my 100 2.8 macro and getting the 18-200. Finances are tight and I think I can pick up a couple hundred bucks in the trade and get, what appears to be, a good do-it-all lens. Your thoughts?

I had the opportunity to borrow a friend's for two weeks or so. It was okay on the wide end, completely unusable to me on the telephoto end. The only shots I saved with this lens were shot at 18mm. I have some good telephoto primes so maybe I am spoiled in that regard. Quite a bit of CA throughout the range.

My Canon 18-55 Kit lens takes much sharper photos. I have owned this lens for about 8 months now, not a big fan. I am selling it and picking up either the Canon 18-200 IS or Canon 18-135 IS more likely.

Ended up going with 18-135 IS. Much better of a lens!

No one has posted here for a while.

Thinking of picking this lens up and pairing it with a 10D. That will be my "throw it in the car" setup.

Everything I have read on this lens says it is sharp and probably better than some of those other "all purpose" zooms. Of course the canon 18-135 just came out so it might be better and for a higher price.

Hi,

The photos here are magnificent. Are these outputs directly from the lens or have they been post-processed? I too have this lens but maybe I dont know how to use it properly. My photos dont have this sharpness that I see in these photos.

Am uploading these two sets of photos. The sole idea have been to understand the concept of depth of field. And thats why I have taken these photos at different aperture values. There are two sets of photos that I am uploading here. There have been no cropping here and the original photo is uploaded on this site. The names of these files shows the specifications at which these have been shot.
Will be grateful if you can please share tips on how the sharpness and overall focus on these photos could have been improved.

I downloaded the last picture and you are right. Focus is off. What camera are you shooting with.

You should try a focus test with this lens and see if it is off. To test my lenses I focus, I have a drywall square that I use. Although a ruler of yardstick should do the same thing. Set it up propped on its edge on a table or counter. Extend the lens to full length and shoot as wide open as the lens will allow. Focus on a point on the ruler and check the image on your computer to see it the lens is focusing where you want it to. The point on the ruler you are focusing on should be sharp. Make sure to select a focus point on the camera. I use the center.

Use autofocusing, not manual.

Hello,
I didnt have a ruler or yardstick at my house and hence tried this with a graph paper on which I made markings to distinguish one from another. Please see the result. As suggested by you, the Centre AF point was activated and the photo was taken in Autofocus mode. The focal length was 200 mm and the aperture was F6.3, which is the widest at 200mm. At this setup the centre AF point was on the digit 10 of the scale. As you can see (I have verified using a 200% magnification in DPP software) the areas in and around 10 is in better focus than either the top or the bottom extreme.

OK that rules out camera shake.

I looked at the f16 picture. Because of the nature of the picture it is a bit hard to determine much. But it looks ok as far as focus.

I would suggest that you take some more shots. Do some people or maybe some architecture.

I would also suggest that you start a thread on the lens forum and post the pictures asking for assistance.

Outside of that, the only thing I can tell you is have a service center look at the lens and camera.

That's what these "superzooms" do - it's hard to design a lens with that large a ratio yet be very sharp. It'll be sharper if you step it down to its "sweet spot" (usually around f8 ).

I was shopping for one - the Tamrons with "XR" tend to be the better ones over the older ones without that designation. Decided against one until I can afford a better one - the older/cheaper ones are not very good (hence a lot of them available on the used market).

Some of them are stopped down quite a bit. I only looked at one at first and it was OOF. Looked at some others and they appear to be OK.

I love it. It doesn't do well in low light situations, but otherwise its convenience is hard to beat.

Leif; were any of these sharpened before uploading? I'm looking at the first two and they seem plenty sharp. The face shot is just a tad soft but not bad at all. I still think I might pick up one of these and sell my 17-40L and 100 f2.8 macro.

ps: you might want to check out my site for folks with Hanson, Henson, Hinson and Hynson surnames.

Well, I bit the bullet last summer and bought the lens. I've played with it for the last six months and it's been a love/hate relationship.

Pros:
- great range
- good construction
Cons
- noisy
- a tad soft

I love the range on this lens and it has now become my 'walk around lens.' At 300mm, I've seen better but not at this price. At 28mm it will rate right up there with the big boys.

Saturday I went to the Timonium Maryland Fairgrounds for the annual bike show and extremely happy with the photo results. My 5D and the Tamron handled the lighting better than I expected. I shot everything at 1600 ISO (the lighting was terrible and I knew that, because of the chrome on the bikes, a flash was out of the question) and handheld.

You can see all the photos in my smugmug gallery at http://hinson.smugmug.com/ShowsandCruise-ins/Timonium-Fairgrounds/Feb-2011/15820121_WE6YW or just click the photo below.

When you get to this one, click the X2 link up top to blow it up and you will see what I got at 1/20sec, 260mm, 1600ISO handheld. Sixty three of the images were shot at 1/15th sec or slower and hand held.

http://hinson.smugmug.com/ShowsandCruise-ins/Timonium-Fairgrounds/Feb-2011/IMG2238/1186129380_ejdtN-S.jpg (http://hinson.smugmug.com/ShowsandCruise-ins/Timonium-Fairgrounds/Feb-2011/15820121_WE6YW#1186129380_ejdtN-A-LB)

All in all, I'm extremely happy with the lens and will definitely keep it on the camera.
