I currently have a set of macro filters. I like them, but the filter size is for one of my old lenses, which I would like to trade in. So, my options are to get another set of macro lenses or purchase a set of extension tubes.

My question to this forum - Any preference for one versus the other? Obviously, the extenstion tubes are a bit more versitile as they work with any lens. But what about image quality/light loss, etc? How do extension tubes stack up against macro filters?

(note - unfortunately a macro lens is not in the cards at the moment, so I'll have to make due with filters or tubes).

I prefer extension tubes. No optics involved, so no further image degradation. You loose some light (probably more than with a macro filter), but it´s a more elegant "one tube fits all" solution also. Macro filters are useful for fixed lens cameras, but IMHO in a SLR extension tubes are the way.

... I'd agree. Extension tubes are fairly cheap as well, I use the Kenko set and you can get *really* close with those.

Easy to keep the glass in extension tubes clean as well.... ;) :D

Tubes. No contest in my opinion.
