I'm easy, I have one good tent, and I think a 2nd somewhere, maybe, but it might be a bit mouldy.

Will be damn cold though.
Its all up to Duncan really, and he's got a wife and baby to think about as well.

I would imagine we would prob only head to 6, 8 & 10

Wouldnt have time to get to the others without seeing a few cars... most cars start the next stage before the others even finish so yeah.. genearlly you miss one and go to the next

Thats how I always did it in the past.
It also gives you time to find the best spots, get in front of crowds, go for a bit of a walk etc.

You have to remember that the WRC is run on public roads, so by law, as public citizens we have unlimited access to them, as long as are on foot.
There is a lot of debate in the rally comunitiy about whether or not they can even charge acess to viewing areas on the stages. Sadly no one has yet tried to test it, but it is a very dubious practice.

If you knew the area you could walk in to stages and get to parts that arent necessarily official spectator points.... :D I know the Port Waikato/Franklin area pretty well - but am yet to get our map to see which roads they are actually using.

The really, really keen guys will have aleady been through all the stages and picked the ideal shooting/spectating locations.
They will have then planned thier day around access roads etc, and they will usualy start by driving into a stage and parking up before its closed, they then drive out at the end after the last car has been through.

Thanks, Moppie.

I had in mind what you suggested, and will try to make a trip around the morning course. I've previously been around the southern roads looking for limestone photo-ops, and wanted to do the south Port Waikato limestone stacks. Good enough reason.

So, if I picked up the toys I threw out of the cot last week:

a) Is there still a seat available on the broadband bus?
b) What tickets do I need to buy to have the same as the rest of you?

Thanks.

It took well over two hours from Tauranga to get to the start of Stage 6, so was not able to traverse Stages 7 and 8, unfortunately. These two notices at the start of 6 and end of 8 make me wonder if going into the course area early will result in being trapped there for so long that only one position can be covered in a morning or afternoon.

Perhaps the spectator points have some advantage, but the traffic jams could be considerable!

lil_miss
23rd of August 2007 (Thu), 16:29
We got our tickets last night and after having a look at the maps it almost seems like we wont get anywhere near the stages.... the key points I would have gone for - such as walking into the stage from the end or the start - seem to have "Spectators Prohibited" marked on the map. There are only 2 roads that lead to spectator points at the most on the stages and some have none which is pointless... I imagine half the population will be heading to the same vantage points which is less than ideal - given traffic jams etc.....

*sigh* I'm guessing there are other roads in the area so I will consult another map - even if I have to jump fences I'd rather not follow the herd.....

Wazza
23rd of August 2007 (Thu), 16:44
Sure there's plenty of people around, but apart from one of the final stages, and really wet boggy carpark, didn't encounter too many jams.

Hope you all get some great shots, and fine weather this year!

a few years ago I lived in Raglan and we watched the rally, we got to spots away from the crowd by getting there a little earlier and walking. got some great spots too, we would watch until the best had gone through then leave to the next, or one after depoending where an access road was.

definitely take a plastic bag, or something to keep dust or rain out of your gear, take a good amount of cloth etc with as. cant wait to see all of your images, i have to go to Tauranga leaving on friday so I might try and catch it in Waitomo for some images. anyway I hope that helps. looking forward to seeing some great images :-)

I used to do the same thing, but that was back when it was free to enter the stages, and there wasn't a lot of crowd control.
Now it looks likes its really heavily controlled :(

lil_miss
26th of August 2007 (Sun), 16:06
Yeah that's what i'm worried about too - i dont think its anything like other rallies I've been to... what a shame. It says on the map there are spectators prohibited from some start and finishes of stages - meaning i'm sure they wouldnt let you walk in if you wanted (as that would have been my plan of attack to get away from the herds).

Is there a plan for Saturday? Are we meeting anywhere or just every man for themselves?

MHP
27th of August 2007 (Mon), 01:07
that really sux eh!. theres always one that ruins it for the rest of us eh. I got this photo last time of this guy with a point and shoot leaning on a fence post on the inside of a corner. a car came within inches of it, looked like it was going to hook it, the guy dived, and i got the photo. this was pre digital days, so please dont ask to see it cause i'd have to sift through tons of boxes of photos! :-(

I was thinking stage 6, then stage 8, quick bite for lunch then either stage 10 or 11 depending on wether a late afternoon stage might be more interesting.
Moppie? Chris? any thoughts?

1,3,5 and 6 all look like they could be the plan.

5 get near finsh of stage to get the finsh of 6 with a short drive / walk

Here's our plan
Start of stage 1 = OK (provided we get there early enough to avoid the masses)
Short drive to end of stage 3 = Walk in from the finish (anticipate first car around 10.45)

Suggest maybe we meet up at Naike for lunch while cars head to superstage/service

Drive and walk into start of stage 5.

Can't get to start/finish of stage 6 (spectator access denied). Drive up to spectator point 11.1 by pepepe if we're not sick of it by this stage (anticipate first car at 4pm here).

I have some bits to do around town - then i am going south to meet mark (mhp) for the arvo.

Heading back to yours for around dinner time. I will need to pop over to see Tony as well.

Early start - Saturday. (are we getting picked up?)

Saturday night. we hit the town - Lil miss and Momentz are keen -

Sunday a trek out with lord lucan (weka) -

Unless of course you have planned something. :p

I fly back Monday at 11:30 - and as i have the car i will be able to drop that off and be back in chch to pick up the kids from school.

Yeah we're Manukau Heights - about 10-15 mins from your place Moppie.... dgcorner (John) is coming with us and meeting us at our place at 6.30.... we could meet at BP on the side of the motorway at Drury to allow for any stockpiling or anything... or we can just meet at our place and carry on.... whatever you guys want to do...

i'm guessing it will take about an hour and a half max to get there... so that would mean getting there about 8ish (leaving at 6.30 from Auckland), allowing for traffic and parking and then hiking into the stage or whatever.. :D

so if i am going to watch 1 rural run, do i have to buy a ticket? or can i buy one there, or are they going to sting me for $20 just to watch 10 cars go passed? careful with the walkie talkies guys, i duno if i would use them in a WRC event where contact is imperative to them. dont want to throw a spanner in your works but worth thinking about...... "left hand 50 degrees corner.... 'dinner tonight, over'.... tight..... 'hey moppie, check out this corner over'..... you dont wanna miss it" oops!!

   Classic!

However the in car intercoms are all hard wired, and the team radios networks are generally encrypted (yes the competition is that tight).

you could just walk in.
Tell the marshals you live on the farm next door, and you need to check some stock.

Better yet, tell them they have no legal right to demand payment to a public event held on public roads, and if they wish to stop you looking at that particular bit of road they can talk with your lawyers, or the police if they try to forcibly remove you.

Nzshrimper

or claim its your customary right to walk on that road as your forefathers have done for many years. nothing like pulling the race card out.. ;)

I'm not too concerned with either size, I've got 3 x 160G onboard, the one for photo's is 80% full, video one 75% full so I need to do something reasonably soon.

So is there any plan for Saturday night, or are just going to see what everyone feels like after the rally?

With the last stage not starting till around 3.45 - 4ish - I would suggest we would be back in Auckland at say 6 - 6.30ish? Dependent on how long people would stay for, if they stayed for the last stage at all.....

Seeing as we all seem to be in the vicinity of Botany - could the Cock and Bull Botany be an idea for a drink?

Could be good, its close to most of us.
However I have a suspecion the Shrimp is looking for a more full on night on the town, don't how ready we will all be for it after a full days rallying though..............

Cock and Bull is quite good for a feed too, so we could meet there 7ish. Those who want food can get it, those who want drinks can get them, then those who want to head off into the city for the full on night out can do so. Sounds good to me.

Four of us from Tauranga will be at WRC on Saturday, and will look out for you.

The 8.1 spectator point is a cross-roads with good space, but is too hard for us to get to from south. Spectators may not be allowed to leave until the last rally car has transited from SS7 to SS8 start.

This is the 8.3 Matakitaki Rd spectator area., showing the approach, through and exit stretches, with the spectator access road.

The 8.4 Bothwell Loop Road shows the approach and exit, with spectator access road and paddock parking.

Looking at the maps downloadable from the rally site, I think we will go onto Baker Road, which runs between stage 6 & 8. The road used for stage 8 closes to the public from 8:00am. By going down this road, we will miss out on stage 7 ( will not be able to get out until after last car on stage 8 ) but will be away from most of the crowds, should be able to walk up/down the stage to find best available spot without being hastled too much. Stage 6 starts at 9.00am (last car would be about an hour after), stage 8 starts at 10:20.

From here, we will probably just do the standard spectator stages of 10 & possibly 11. From there, head into Hamilton & go to the rugby.

Looks like the weather will be ok, possibly a bit windy. I wouldn't worry too much about dust protection, been well & truely wet enough not to worry about it.
Last year, similar weather conditions, definatly a lot wetter on the first two days. On the Sunday, no rain most of the time, some spectator stages were ropped off only a meter from the road, dust was not an issue but stones definatly are:rolleyes:

from Sarah :

We're planning on heading to the start of 6 and walking in a bit - about the only part you can get to... then was thinking of the Bothwell Road part of Stage 8 as Clive has shown above... Although the 8.3 point looks a bit more interesting... Dont really want to get locked into a stage till the last car I dont think...

I see on their maps there are lots of different corner types that they wont let you stand on.. so bl00dy boring!! :D heh... seems the only place you can stand is on a straight and where is the fun in that!! no insides of corners, no 90degree bends... bah!

If you walk far enough into a stage, and avoid the safety car, there is little they can do stop you standing where you like :D

Of course standing 1m from the inside of a corner is not really the best idea, even your wearing a marshals jacket, thats not actually yours.......................

Mark Vuleta

There wont be marshals everywhere, mainly at spectator points and the likes of heli points on the various stages, if you get into a stage well before the start, you can more or less walk where you want. As long as your not in a stupid position and not causing any issue with the farmers property, not too much of a problem. When the safety cars come through (normally two of them, 10-15 minutes appart) and your not in a unsafe spot, not a problem. Dont forget your toilet paper:lol:

Yip, lets all remember our escape routes, and remember not run away from the car.
Run at it, and perpendicular to it.

My dad was telling me a story the other day about a guy on one rally he was the steward at - this photographer dug a hole in the road and sat in it - the cars went over him.. they didnt know he was there till half way through and boy did he get in the sh*t :D

I looked at both ends of Baker Road, and if you can get in, it could be an excellent approach. My crowd don't want to be up early enough to get there in time.

No spectator tickets required, either!
