So, I haven't been unhappy with my tripod (190XPROB + 484RC2), but the head hasn't been perfect - the lack of a ball lock is frustrating. Anyway, at work I'm doing an experiment with a massive panoramic stitch, and using my own equipment, but said that I'd need a better tripod head - one where I can lock the ball, so they're buying a 488RC2, and though I'm leaving in a couple of weeks, said I could have it as a leaving pressie :D.

What you doing with the 484?

At one stage Skip was touting the 486RC2 as being good - so I bought one and it is great - but I have a funny feeling the 488RC2 may be in my future, too... :)
I doubt I would get my employer to pay for one, though. That is a top score.

I like "free stuff". You got a great present.
John - I still very much like the 486RC2 for my monopod, but have used the 488RC2 on my tripods for quite some time.
The 486RC2 is lighter which is better on a monopod. Also, on a monopod there's no value to the pan lock feature of the 488RC2.

What you doing with the 484?
Nothing planned for it - why are you in the market for one? How about a trade for your 100-300 f/4? ;)
Seriously - I'm not sure whether this head would be suitable for a lens like that, but you can always borrow it, and see what you think.

Thanks everyone - I was really happy when they said I could keep it - now, only to find thing s that need a tripod to shoot - I mainly shoot my kids running around outside, so prefer to shoot handheld (plus going to the park isn't the most practical taking a tripod with!)

Well I really need to get my heads sorted if you will pardon the pun.
I have a Gitzo 1177M head but it doesn't have a QR so I need a head for my mono and one for my Feisol so the 484 might work on the mono given it won't be holding the full weight.
Looking to move the Gitzo on too.... either way I would want 2 heads with matching QRs obviously. I had been leaning towards a Benro head mainly cos it uses the Arca QR plates.

Ah - fair enough, well if you decide you don't mind the 'frotto RC2 QR plates, give me a shout - I'm in no rush to be rid of it. From what Skip said, it'd make a good monopod head.
If we can meet up, I could do it for £33 (take 20% off new price) - it's in 'as new' condition as it's had very light use.

Sorry - though if I hear of anyone giving a $150 head away for free, I'll try and remember to let you know ;)
