Got my new macro lens today..yahoo! Ordered from B&H on Monday, shipped via UPS (I had instructed them to ship via USPS). The odd thing about this was that UPS left a $1089 US pkg sitting on my door step (I ordered a few other things) WITHOUT a signature, out in the wide open... the box has B&H all over it, glad no one else "dropped by". Secondly, there were NO customs documents on the box.... and now the weird part, I got a message on my answering machine from UPS asking if I would like to have my own 3rd party do the customs clearing or a UPS broker do the clearing "before we deliver your parcel". I already had the lens, why would I worry about that now? haha... the message goes on to say that I don't need to respond if it's ok that UPS does the customs clearing.. OK by me!

After all is said and done, I'm happy all worked out with this purchase .. I live in Canada, and on more than one occasion have had a bad experience ordering on-line across borders.

Now for the lens,... I put it and my 580 EX flash on my 30D ... wow is this heavy.. I already see why this isn't for the faint of heart to get the amazing macro shots you people put up on this board! Well I'm off to the pond in search of my first "prey"
:)

Congrats........Now show us some pics when you come back :)

BTW, I had bad experience with UPS for customs clearance and yes, they tend to deliver without signature........anyway, just glad that it works out for you.

Cheers ;)

Ok, got a few shots. I found bugs were darn nearly impossible to get close enough to, and then when I did, I couldn't "find" them in the lens!

Having trouble uploading files of the correct size, but here is one... hopefully it attaches ok here.

lots of bees, but since I really didn't feel up to getting stung, I kept my distance from them.

They look ok, but to small to see how good.
Try 800 X 800 max, @ 100 kb. max

1/100 f2.8, brave man. Anyway welcome to the MPE owner's club.

Congrats on your new lens!

Try shooting in manual mode (M) with smaller aperture (f8 or so), you'll get much better results than with aperture priority and f2.8. I'm assuming you're going to use flash; set the shutter speed to 1/125 or faster.

thanks for the tips ... I didn't have much time before work to experiment. I'm heading out again today to see what I can find.

Congrats. Getting above lifesize just opens new vistas. The lens does take a little getting used to. Enjoy and congrats again.
