Hey, I have been needing to get a lens hood for my 17-55. But, I was wondering, if you are zoomed out at 17mm, does it still provide the complete wide angle to get the entire inside of the churches, formal shots, etc? Or does it take part of the image out?

nope, it doesn't effect the image at all from 17 all the way to 55mm

Each hood is designed specifically for the lens so that its not in shot no matter where your zoom is .... so no it doesnt .... prepare yourself for the cost of the 17-55 F2.8 IS hood though because its a silly price.

Oh dear lord, a silly price? I am now afraid to even go look. My 70-200 came with one but not my 17-55. :-( I also need to get some filters to protect the glass.

All L lenses come supplied with hoods. all other you have to buy seperately. its an absolute joke that this is the case but there you go eh
I have a Hoya Super HMC Pro1 UV filter on my 17-55 at all times.
if your gonna put glass in front of an excellent lens like the 17-55 then dont go cheap on it

yip, shocking isnt it. the way i see it though. it protects the front elements and i'd rather have a bashed hood than a bashed front element.
still a crazy price for a hood though isnt it

I just bought my 17-55, so now I need to look for a hood too. I was amazed at the jump in price of the 17-55. Radio Shack has it for 1699.00 NO JOKE!

I shelled out an extra $50 for the hood when I bought my 17-55 from B&H... Def helps with the glare though.

I bought a hood from ebay, a Hong Kong special. It was a good value compared to the genuine product. The quality is fine.
It also helps to protect the lens and expensive filter. It's always mounted.

I find lens hoods provide al the protection I need for the front element of the lens.
I've yet to find a filter that hasn't degraded my images in some way, so I've done away with them.

I noticed w/ the 17-55 that the lens hood rotates very easily, especially if you brush against something and so it can end up in your wide angle shots if you're not careful. I had to fix a few w/ black corners. ooops.

Important: If you buy the hood from Canon, make sure you screw it on right (i.e. red dot lines up with red dot) - cuz if it's put on wrong, it'll leave you with a shade somewhere in one of the corners - not pretty! Did that and won't do it again!

That's what I mean Petra...it has to stay on perfectly because any roation and it does show up.

List price for the hood in NZ is $100 - US$80 or so. I got it free with the lens because I give all of my business to one camera store... and I was asking about the 1DIII at the time ;)
Also make sure during the day that the hood hasn't moved, I occasionally get it in my shots and it's a pain. There's apparently an ebay version that's cheap.

Philco, never had the hood come lose - but I have put it on wrong in the beginning - and did learn the lesson that way. Too bad the red dots are so small though, hard to see in bad light.

I did find one on ebay that's only 10 bucks and 8 bucks for shipping. It's through a company called HK. But it's a knock off . Does anyone use this and is it just as good as the original?

For me, the hood would rotate from having the camera bounce around on my side when I'm using my other camera. I'd swap back to the 17-55 and see black corners, eeek.

Philco, do you have the knock off version?

Alicia,
I have the one you mentioned. It seems to be the same material as the Canon, but the markings are different. I have on occasion had it rotate slightly, but I've heard that it also happens on the Canon model. I put a little piece of gaffer's tape on the hood to hold it a little better to the lens. Holds fine for the gig.

Sounds like it's worth a go, for that price. They probably copied the Canon one pretty closely, or exactly.

Well, hopefully it will be a good copy and I won't get burned. I have a few other things I need to purchase right now too so I need to be careful with expenses.

How about a sheet of black cardboard, rolled up, and some duct tape? Cut the cardboard to the desired shape - petal, round, or gingerbread men.
