I think fill-in flash will make the subject pop, and reduce harsh shadow.

Yep - I think they would be terrific with a bit of fill-in flash;;; but they are very good. I like the bit of dust in #1 and to a leeser extent in #3

thanks for the advice. I don't have an external flash or anything, will the built-in one work ok for this? or is it not powerful enough? what would be a good flash setup?

thanks

The built in flash will probably only help up to about 3 to maybe 5 metres -- 10 to 15 feet.
A more powerful flash will improve them a lot (but might not go down too well with competitors)

I like #1 the best.

Fill Flash might make them pop a little, but all in all, they're great for your first time out

well this isn't a competition or anything, just decided to bring my camera along when we went riding. I'll look into the external flash, it wasn't something I was planning on buying, but I can see how it can make my pictures better.

thanks for the replies.

I think your first shot is really good - it captures the action really well and it shows the whole scene (and that border works surprisingly well, for me). The other to are good, but I think they are cropped a bit too tight. Other than that, very good for your first time sport shooting with your 70-200. You should definitely do some more.
