Yes, I graduated today. But as I was walking towards the area the students were to sit I spotted it, the press man. But first you must realize that I live in a very small town with one very small newspaper with two very low budget freelance photographers (Nikon users  ). So when I saw the man with the 1Ds I had to stop. When I saw the 24-70mm Canon L series lens I had to nod...when he pulled out the 70-200 f/2.8 USM IS L I had to say, “Hey! Nice camera...”
When my friends around me asked "why does he need a lens that big?”, I said “Oh my friends, that? That is not a large lens. In fact that is a rather small lens with a mere focal length of 200mm” I said. “I have every intention of buying that small lens next month. It is a very fast lens indeed with wonderful image quality.”
“Fast?” my friends asked, “I thought the camera needed to be fast” Oh how they will never understand what makes a lens worth $1600
Graduation money? What graduation money! This money is a down payment on my new lens.
Oh but my story is not over yet, as I sat there, as my fellow classmates spoke, as the teachers spoke, and as the songs were sung...well, and don’t get me wrong I wanted nothing more then to get done and move on with my life there is nothing more except to be one of the photographers roaming the event that is. When I see a person with a nice SLR in their hand, and mine are empty...I am in envy for I am lesser of a person. And when this is the larger part of my train of thought...when I find myself watching the way he picks his location more then I watch my former science teacher praise the class of 2004, well, that is when I realize that I am a photographer.
