View Full Version : Dumb mistake!

So I brought my new 75-300 IS lens in to work last Friday so I could go out and shoot stuff on my lunch break. I go two blocks down the street and here come 3 fire engines from three different directions! At the next corner and over one street, I see a garbage truck dumping its full load of trash in an empty lot. What's this, then?

All of a sudden, I see flames shooting up out of the huge pile of trash, and the fire trucks are a block away, not knowing where the fire is they've been called to. I yell and wave at them, pointing to where the garbage truck is.

Meanwhile I'm getting my 10D out of my bag, and getting ready to shoot some exciting action photos, and I realize I left the %&*^%% flash cards on my desk! I've got nothing in the camera! And no pictures to show off. What a moron!

Noobie lesson #43, ALWAYS make sure you've got a card in your camera AT ALL TIMES!

Sigh.

Ughhh.. that hurts!

One method to overcome both the CF and Battery mistake.. is every time you are going out with the Camera.. do NOT walk out the door without shooting a photo and reviwing it to make sure all is working.

Yep I did the same thing,, tried to take a pic and no CF :?

Fix =

2nd CF card
2nd set batteries
Storage place is camera bag.
Only one set allowed out of the bag at a time :D

Going on this idea.... something I usually do is when I'm going to go shoot without my camera bag strapped to me (i.e. just taking the camera and nothing else) I always get an extra battery out of my bag, as well as a small wallet--type thing I've got that has extra CF cards in it, and stick them in my pocket. That way even if I don't have a card/battery in the camera, I have my backup... and while you may miss the first shot(s) at least you won't have to miss them all.

BTW, in case anyone is interested, the wallet thing I'm talking about is something I got at Kmart for $3.99, and is this: http://www.the-gadgeteer.com/caselogic-digital-media-case-review.html
the one reviewed there is different from mine in that it closes with just a velcro strap... mine has a zipper that completely encloses the entire thing, but the rest is the same. It's a nice accessory to have, IMO.

I like that card thingy, Elbirth. I think I'll wander over to the local Compu-Town at lunch today, see what they've got.

Great, let me know if you decide to get one or something like it, and how you like it, if you do.
My family and I had stopped by a Kmart one evening while out, and while I was waiting on them to get ready to go, I wandered into the electronics section to see if they had any decent camera stuff... and as I was looking around, that little thing caught my eye... and for only $4 I couldn't say no :)

Yep--did that too. Went out and got a second card which I keep in my case just in case I leave a card in the reader.

I did something like this when I first got my camera. I put a CF in the camera and walked down a trail until it was full. I went to put in my second card, and discovered I grabbed the empty case for the CF that was in the camera. At least I got some shots, but none of the deer I came across on the way back.
