Well I took my 2nd trip to B&H to see the 70-300 DO IS. Almost for nothing. They still don't have a display lens, so no luck at actually handling it or snapping a few through my D60.
But, I did get to play with a 1D MK2 and a 70-200 2.8 IS, an 85 1.2 L an 85 1.8, and a 200 2.8 L.
Man the 1D Mk2 is amazing I'd need a month just to weed through it mechanically. It's great what money can buy... wish I had some
I can see wy the 85 1.2 L is so covetted. what a gorgeous lens, big and somewhat intimadating, looking through that 1.2 aperature is like a giant eyeball. what a beautiful lens. But the 85 1.8 is more in my world . I'm not a pro and I think that lens needs to pay for itself at least for me. Next the 70-200 2.8 IS. That lens is everything the owners say it is ....big heavy. obvious... and fast as they come. sharp and the Image Stabilization is awsome. I was taking shots at 200m 1/50 400 iso and getting good clear images. I am impressed . I want this lens but, still want to see the 70-300 DO IS . as a street inconspicuos lens . If it is anywhere near the 70-200 I will get it, if not I want the 70-200 :D .
As for the 200 L another goo lens but I definatly need a tripod in any low light . When you have both the IS lens and the non IS 200 in your hand the advantages of Image Stabilization are huge  . Well that was my day and adventure in the land all good things photographically.

Hope I didn't go on too much
Eric

I just returned from a short holiday in the USA last week (visiting my brother who lives in New Jersey).

Ofcourse I also went to B&H in New York and I bought the 70-300 DO IS USM. The guy told me I was lucky, because they had only one left in stock. My brother also wanted to buy one, so he ordered one, and it was delivered to his doorstep in 3 days - so it looks like it wasn't really out of stock...

I wonder what's happening with the 70-300 DO, are they selling so fast that B&H has only a few of them in stock all the time or are they, for some reason, putting a brake on selling them?

See my topic here, with my first impressions of the 70-300 DO and a link to a review with comparisons to the 70-200 f/2.8 L and other lenses: http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=34425

I personally haven't used a 70-200 L, but the image quality of the 70-300 DO is probably somewhere in between consumer-grade tele lenses and the big white L lenses, but it's probably closer to the L lenses than the consumer-grade lenses, judging from the review.

There is no financial gain in telling people that something you can buy /order somewhere else is out of stock. B&H gets deliveries all the time. One probably came in that day or the next and went into inventory.

UPS from B&H to NJ is next day delivery even if mailed ground. They could have gotten more in 2 days after you were there and you got it in the mail on the 3rd. I live in NJ, I know B&H very well - their parking guy ran my girl over with a car.... she's ok now, but she did have a broken foot in a cast for a few months last year.

I sometimes wish it would be me who got ran over.... could have bought a lot of 'L' lenses after that :-)

Going to NYC in November to do some Christmas Shopping (first trip to NYC). Going to have to visit "the Photographer's Mecca". Gee, I wonder what I can talk Santa (my wife in this case) into putting under the tree?
