Or at least that's what Seagate spokesman John Paulsen says:
The new 1-inch products will be available in the third quarter as part of Seagate's largest ever product portfolio expansion, the company said. Exact prices were not disclosed, but Seagate spokesman John Paulsen said the 5-gigabyte compact flash card and USB external drive will each cost less than $200.

Interesting! But it's not a 5 GB compact flash card (solid state memory), it's a 5 GB microdrive (hard drive).

Compact Flash memory is semiconductor memory (solid state=no moving parts).
Microdrive is a very tiny hard disk drive with moving parts. It is thought to consume more power and be somewhat susceptible to hard shock.

True enough, but 5GB and under $200.00 PLUS:
Seagate listened to the music player market and has reinvented the 1-inch hard drive to compete with or beat flash memory in performance, reliability, battery life and cost.
If Seagate really does follow through with their intention to equal or best CF card performance AND do it at a lower price point I'll quit thumbing my nose at microdrives and get a couple. "Hey Jeff, how many pictures can you take on that thing before it fills up?" Jeff says "I don't know, I've never gotten that far..." ;)
Seagate does good stuff.

I don't like the part with the 2.5 seconds-to-ready too much
Best regards,
Andy

its time-to-ready is 2.5 seconds or less, and its unique rugged design will change the reputation of 1-inch hard drives, helping music players withstand the abuse that hand-held devices take.
There's mention of a Compact Flash Photo Hard Drive in the paragraph after that quote. I wonder if the Photo Drive will have different TTR specs...
BTW, whats the TTR (Time to Ready) for current microdrives? Hitachi's spec sheet lists data speed but I didn't note a Time to Ready reference.
Anybody?

Also micro drives have slower response time and lower write/read speeds than solid state drives such as CFs.
