View Full Version : POTNAC Newcastle meet (Australia)

EDIT: This might as well be a general Newie sub-thread until someone starts another one. So until further notice, we'll plan Newcastle POTN stuff in here. K?
This is the official planning thread for our first big POTNAC (POTN Aussie Club) Newcastle meet. Since there are so many of us now.
So here are the objectives:
1.) Pick a date within 1 month of today (17/7). Preferably a Saturday (unless I'm wrong about this conflicting least with work, church and sunlight).
2.) Pick a venue within 20-30 minutes drive of Newcastle's CBD to go walking/shooting/whatever together.
3.) Organise car pooling for those who need it (or just to be green).
4.) Do it!
Go forth and discuss!

I'm in!
I can do either Sat. the 28th or Sat. the 4th.
Venue? Hmmm.
I can drive people if they want :)

Ill go third and discuss, not quite forth yet...
Unfortunately due to work, I can't guarantee any Saturday available. But if the date is set, I can try my best to get the day off. (Saturday overtime rates for an apprentice make a big difference to the weekly pay!)
As for a venue, anywhere I guess, I'm yet to take any decent photos, (at all!) so anywhere will be fine by me!
I have my own transport, and if work permits and I can attend, I'm also happy to drive others.
Now goes fourth!

Well, Saturday the 28th is out ... because 1.) it's tomorrow and 2.) (not meaning to be selfish, but ...) I'm going to be in Sydney all day.
So let's aim to do something on the 4th.
I propose a sunrise+breakfast+chimping timeslot, but if that's not do-able for others maybe we can go later in the day. My initial thoughts on location:
* Somewhere coastal (Jim, you've been doing this recently so maybe you could suggest a location).
* Somewhere on the road to Maitland (around Hexham) -- there tends to be low-lying fog there early in the morning and *from memory* there might be some nice spots to stop and go walking around the river. (Alright, some research required.)
Would an early timeslot help with your work, llenuts?
Just my thoughts. Feedback welcome. Anyone with better ideas can feel free to take over :-D

So let's aim to do something on the 4th.
The 4th would suit me well, as I know I won't be working that weekend.
Any place suits me, and for a time slot, anytime is fine by me, I will just go home and back to bed afterwards!
Ohh, and a chance to try out my new 580EXII would be good too, along with someone who can show me the fancy things it can do!

Well my next sunrise idea actually involved cemetaries... have yet to see how that one'll pan out tho :p Actually... the Porkers are playing on the evening of the 3rd so if we are doing a sunrise one I'm gonna be pretty buggered.
Hey, we could always do a zoo trip.. Cessnock Zoo anyone? I haven't been there but apparently it's alright...

For me to be there, not the 11th. 4th is best for me if it's finished by 11am as my girly is doing a concert.
I have no idea for a venue. But I have no artistic streak (yet!)

Okay ... so it's looking like a sunrise shoot of some sort, followed by brekkie somewhere nearby, perhaps followed by an optional museum visit.
Jim, any particular cemeteries you had in mind? What do others think of this? I'm keen ...
Please throw any more ideas you might have into the mix. If no-one else steps in earlier, I'll make a final decision for us on Friday morning. Meanwhile, if those who are planning to be there could please PM me their mobile number, email address, suburb and car situation (seats needed/available), I'll coordinate the transport.
Cool!

I was actually thinking of Stockton cemetary - though that's got me thinking....
I've never actually tried but how easy would it be to access the sand dunes from the road further up towards the Bay? There are some damn big sand dunes along there and that could be very cool with some sunrise/morning light happening. Haven't been there since I have a car, though (boy, that's been a while) and I always used to walk there from quite a ways back - which is obviously not any good at that hour of the morning.
I also need to sus out whether the Stockton cemetary has anything interesting in it at all - I might pop around there tomorrow or the day after to do a quick assessment for shootable things ;)

I'm 99% sure that the sand dunes at Stockton are pretty inaccessible, unless you like 2 hour hikes or have a 4WD vehicle. My partner used to 4WD in that area years ago.

Yes, yes that's true as I've found out thisevening. Can't borrow my parents 4WD on this short notice so that's out! :(
Could always do Sandgate cemetary if we want a cemetary one - that's big enough to accomodate many photographers ;)

Thanks for checking that out Jim ... I would have thought there were more dune photo ops than that too!! Great to know in advance.
Okay, here's my proposal:
* Sunrise shoot at Sandgate Cemetery.
* If it's not working out, we can just drive a bit further up the highway and find something better.
* Breakfast & chimp Hexham Maccas.
* For those who are able/keen, head on over to Cessnock zoo for a few hours (or as long as you please). It opens at 9am and costs $12/head. (I checked out the railway museum and interesting stuff only happens on Sundays ... great thing to aim for next time though!)
Thoughts?
If you're coming, please PM me with aforementioned details (thanks for those who have already ... I'll get back to y'all soon). At this stage with people's varied commitments it might be best for most of us to get ourselves to Sandgate and carpool from there, but let me know your transport status anyway and if it makes sense I'll coordinate something more organised.
Coolness!

I suggest meeting at the cemetery at 6.30am ish. Sunrise is officially 6.42am. I'd say it wouldn't hurt to be a bit later than that, but I'll be aiming for 6.30 myself. We'll probably still be there until 7.30-8ish, after which we can take a vote on wetlands or Cessnock Zoo. (I think I'll be voting for the zoo ... save wetlands until Adam can join in).

anyone else have a 4x4? How about a sunrise at the Sygna (Stockton Beach) followed by a (half?) day of just stuffin around on beach?
ED. said he was gonna come out sometime, so that could be our second 4x4. It would be an early start to get there by sunrise. i haven't actually been to the Sygna before, But I'd imagine we'd need 30 mins from leaving the carpark to getting there
I can take my 4x4 plus 2 people (3 if you dont mind being squished) but I don't want to go out alone...so......

I like the Wetlands idea though I do only have 135mm of reach (well, more if you take into account crop factor but meh)... Can't get too many faraway birdies with that.
I really like the Stockton idea - I may be able to scab Dad's 4WD as we've taken it out to Stockton before (then I took it up and around Fraser Island) and I've got all the appropriat recovery gear and whatnot if necessary :p Heck, he may even want to come.. though he's not into photography as much so he may feel a little left out :p
If we can come up with a date I can sus out the availability of the vehicle - lemme go look at my roster...
Oh and as Joshua mentioned last night on MSN, after daylight savings kicks in it'll be easier to get up for sunrise as it won't be so damned early :p

I probably just have the early mornng to spend on a Saturday before needing to ferry around the kids. I don't have a 4WD so it'd be a pain for anyone to drive me there and back for only a short while.

I'm liking the Sygna idea (although I said dawn stuff wasn't doable) - I've never actually been there and have wanted to for ages. I'd have to ride with someone else though. 4x4ing is definitely something that you want at least 2 vehicles for though. I could manage saturdays but sundays would definitely be better for me.
I wouldn't mind the hillclimb idea, but last weekend showed me that my lens is too slow for such work - seems to struggle to keep up when using AI Servo mode.

We also stopped half-way to drag a massive log up a sand-dune that was covered in broken glass for no reason other than to sit on it at the top. I think we had too many guys and not enough girls on that walk... I blame it on rampaging teenager-itis :p

Went out to the Sygna on Saturday just to have a look-see. It was an easy trip. only took us 10-20 mins from the beach entry. Expect a lot of sand/sea spray on your camera, it seems to always be windy at Stockton Beach.
The extra 2-3 guys with me would make a substantial wieght difference, but I don't think we should have any problems as far as getting stuck goes.
For those that don't want to stay out for other than the sunrise, it wouldn't be a big deal to drop you back at the entry point.

Someone want to work out a meet time?
I would suggest we meet at The Metro at the round about on Lavis Lane (williamtown?..not the airport one..the other one) 60 minutes before sun is due to come up. That gives us 45 minutes to get out there and 15 mins to setup and meet each other. I'd suggest if you are bring a 4x4, you come 70 minutes before sunrise to give you time to get a beach pass if you need it and let tyres down ready to go ($30 for a year, $10 for 3 days)
If anyone has a body board with a plastic/fibreglass base, bring it a long for some sand boarding action :D
We can meet earlier if others think we should?
Attached is a pic of my car - It's the middle one - A green Suzuki Vitara.
I can't see there being many others meeting there, but then again, I think fisherman go out at that sort of time? so there could be lots of 4x4s there.

Hi Clint. Looks like it's on for the 17th. No firm meetup plans so far, but this is what we have so far:
I can't see there being many others meeting there, but then again, I think fisherman go out at that sort of time? so there could be lots of 4x4s there.

any way ill stay tuned.

Hi Clint. Looks like it's on for the 17th. No firm meetup plans so far, but this is what we have so far:
Some have said that it's easier to get to the wreck by entering the beach at the turnoff on Fullerton Rd. about a km from the bridge turnoff and just going straight up the beach there - anyone got good info about the quickest/best way?

My fiancee did a lot of 4x4ing in that area in her younger days, and she says what you're referring to was known as the 'black track' which is an illegal access and may not even still exist (there is a new housing estate in the area.) The only two legitimate accesses are Lavis Lane, and Bribie Point, neither of which she says are a good idea in the dark..
Edit: Correction. Sounds like they're referring to the Cox's Lane access, which is for the sand mine only and is gated off.

Good to know that info!
The Bribie Point place is easy enough to get onto the beach from... I reckon that'd be doable in the predawn light with care. I haven't been able to get to Lavis Lane when it wasn't flooded out so I haven't got much idea about that one...

Yeah I think Bribie point would be easiest and safest, but then we've got a fair drive back down the beach (40Km speed limit) dodging fishermen. Will just need to take it slow and careful. :)

Alright looks like this is all going ahead for the 17th. I'm planning to be there but am shooting a ball the night before, a wedding reception that afternoon and a baby dedication on the Sunday, so I may be somewhat stuffed. I'll post a few firm details and start collecting people's details etc. later this week. If I can't be there I'll hand over the data to ... let's see ... Chris. Thanks for the research everyone (and for the PM, Chris).

Lavis lane is the quickest way in. I haven't had any problems going through there. I did help dig out a hilux last weekend though! haha, darn city folk ;) Birbui is easy as to get in, but it's also 20 mins further on the road, plus I'd say 30+ on the sand. Lavis is our best option unless the other 4x4 is scared of going down to 18psi or lower.
My dad would also like to come along, but he will drop out if we need the space for one of you's.
I'd be estimating meeting at 4:15 to leave at 4:30.The sun will apparently rise around 5:30. That gives us about an hour to get out to the wreck (I think we would need about 20-30 mins if we have no problems..so that gives us a bit of room)
Cheers

Stockton Beach - Sygna POTN Meet Details
CHECK THIS POST FOR UPDATES over the next 2 weeks
DATE : 17th November 2007
TIME: 4:15am meet to leave servo at 4:30am. (4x4 drivers come early if you need beach pass)
PLACE : Metro Service Station, Williamtown, at roundabout, corner of Lavis Lane/Nelson Bay Rd/Cabbage Tree Rd (Search www.whereis.com.au (http://www.whereis.com.au) for "Lavis Lane" "Williamtown") We will get everyone to drive their car to the beach access point, but we will meet at the servo first.
BRING: Camera gear, Lunch in case we are out a while. Body board for sand boarding if you have one. Hat/Sunnies (strongly suggest sunnies)
OTHER STUFF: Take your rubbish home with you. We want Stockton Beach to keep 4x4 access. Respect the owners 4x4's so they are willing to do it again if we want to. We will be in the dark on the way to the Sygna, so driving lights are recommended. Be extra careful reversing back down hills especially if you don't have rear lights.

Hey Jim (and others),
Any chance you could bring along your radio triggers and flash's if they aren't a huge setup? I would love to have a play with this as I want to go down this route in a year or so, but have never seen it outside of photos.
I would also love a run down on how to use flash cause I only have the on board flash which I will be going to a 580 or something early next year.

Hey Clint,
V8s can be hard on the sand if you are new to it - Have you driven it much? Have you had it on the sand at all? It's great that you can get it, but if it causes us problems and we miss the sunset...
but if you have taken it on the beach before it should be ok... I will leave it up to you to decide :)

Had a chat to a fellow who's been 4WD'ing quite a bit and he recommended the Birubi entrance as a safer bet than Lavis Lane... might take 20 mins more but if we got stuck it'd take a lot longer :p He said it would be quite easy to get off the beaten track on Lavis and get stuck in the soft sand between dunes..

Well... from what I've mucked around in at Birubi that ought to be easy enough to access the beach from in the pre-dawn light... Lavis Lane is meant to be rather a lot harder in the dark and worse to get bogged in if you ride off the track.

don't know what birubi track is like. but from what i remember the lavis lane track was a pretty windind track , could be difficult in the dark.

about 20mins further north, up closer to Boat Harbour... it's obviously a bit further to drive back but given a good low tide we ought to be able to make good time along the beach. well, not as good as during the day but still ok!
tides are high around 0120, low around 0630... so it'll be on the low side by the time we get out there.

Bear in mind that a 40Km/hr speed limit applies, and it's likely that fishermen will be out on the beach. Even so it's not all that far.

I think 40km should be plenty enough in the dark on a beach that I haven't driven on more than once before!
Good point with the fishermen, too.

(i think even with high beams on could still be tricky , but im guessing )

whats the go then ?
im easy on anyway ,lavis sounds the easiest on time wise.

Apparently (I havent done it) wet sand is easier....
If it's raining, I'd say we don't go. That's why I have asked for everyone's mobiles. If its not looking good next Friday we can pull the pin. Just make sure you call me if there is doubt :)

I don't really have that many qualms going in on unfamiliar sand but I'd like to check out the place first.. if it's going to be too hard to negotiate in the dark the other one may be a better go :p I suppose I'll see what I can do about getting in there and checking it out before we try it on Saturday.

I have 2 mates that want to come just depends on whether they wake up early enough.haha. They will both have 4x4s if they come, so we will have a fair arsenol it would seem!!
The people I have talked to, other than 1 guy, said normal lights are fine for what we plan to do (ie. a direct trip - not playing on the dunes) Obviously driving lights would be better.
The main consideration from the people I talked to was simply getting lost, but that shouldn't be a major issue.
