It occurred to me recently just how many threads start either with the words 'So' or 'OK'. Has anyone else noticed this? What's the reason do you think?

It is a standard means of cutting through the crowd and drawing attention, transfered to the digital realm.

It's just an easy way of starting off a thread. Rather than having to go into a full out essay with an intro, etc. And we all know we don't want that. :P

I believe it is the word "I". I'm assuming you mean the first word in the body of the post rather than the thread title. I've done some browsing to confirm this. I'll keep looking,but I don't think I'm wrong. I'd've post statistics, but my evidence is purely anecdotal. I'd include all contractions for the word "I" in the list: I, I'm, I've, I'll, I'd, I'd've.

Runners-up would include: Ok, So, Why, How, Help, and Duck

OK, so here's my opinion.:D

When I read it, it's as if they are right in front of me explaining their situation. It kind of makes it personal, which is nice, and more likely to yield a polite response.

As opposed to statements starting out with "Look" which can come across as a demand, rather than a question, or "Alright" which can come off as inpatience.

Why is that being 'so British'? Even Americans can't shorten 'I' surely?

So... It doesn't bother me that these words are very popular.
I don't get it, so I'll leave it alone.
I've got other things to do so I'd better get to it.

Damphyne certainly is no thespian, but I have got to agree with him. I often worry more about the contents of the post, rather than the words. Many of us do not possess the literary ability to form sentences properly, and to compose fluid prose in order to share a technical problem.

And for the sake of trivia, which I am not stranger to, I will say SO, IT, I, would be the most used.

Now we need to send somebody to actually count them, and see if it is true. After all, theories are nothing without some science. Anyhow, let me know how it turns out. :)
